UMBC Wins Back-And-Forth Affair with Delaware
from press release
NEWARK, Del. -- The UMBC women’s lacrosse
team won its forth straight game as the Retrievers tallied seven of
the final 10 goals to defeat the University of Delaware at Rullo
Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
In a game that was knotted on six occasions, UMBC (6-3 overall)
marginally outshot Delaware (2-5 overall), 26-21, and pulled ahead
early in the second frame to never again trail.
Delaware played the majority of the game without leading scorer,
junior Ali Libertini after exiting the field in the first half with
an ankle injury.
Seven Retrievers scored goals, while sophomores Emily Coady and
Alicia Krause led the visiting squad with two each. Junior Amanda
Pappas, who also tallied a score, added a game-high two assists for
UMBC.
Junior Julianna Jeffers and senior Morgan Marino each recorded a
pair of scores for UD, while sophomore Kalyn McDonough scooped up a
game-high four groundballs.
Jeffers opened all scoring with one of the game’s five
free-position goals at 24:06, though UMBC was quick to respond.
Krause used an Erika Braerman feed to score just 52 seconds later
and tie the game at one. Libertini went on to score a man-up goal
at 20:22 for Delaware before the Retrievers would answer with a
Pappas score.
Despite over 10 scoreless minutes ticking off the clock, Delaware
looked to take a steady lead into intermission as Marino and
Jeffers netted free position shots at 6:31 and 3:37 respectively.
This, however, was not the case.
UMBC tallied three consecutive goals to take its first lead of the
game at the 52-second mark. Junior Meagan Linkous was unassisted on
a man-up goal at 2:45 to bring the game to 4-3, but it was
Coady’s crosse that led to the UMBC advantage. Coady scored a
pair of man-up goals separated by just four seconds of game time.
Pappas assisted the Westminster, Md. native on her second
score.
Delaware was able to regain momentum and bring the action to a 5-5
draw as sophomore Stephanie Allen scored a man-down goal with just
19 seconds lingering on the clock. That score stood until the
second frame.
Delaware recuperated and returned to the field in the second stint
to take a 6-5 lead on a Morgan Marino goal at 27:26. But UMBC would
score the next two to never again trail. Freshman Kerianne Allen
capitalized on a Coady assist before Braerman scored at 14:02 on a
Pappas feed.
Junior Holly Burman helped the Blue Hens to tie the game at 7, as
she fed freshman Morgan Leonard for a UD goal at 8:46, but that
proved to be Delaware’s final goal of the game.
UMBC recorded two additional to tally its third victory of the
teams’ last four meetings. Krause scored on a free-position
shot at 7:22 and junior Ashley Stodter ran the length of the field
to score a man-up goal and finalize all scoring at 9-7.
Junior Makenzie Worthington stopped a career-high 13 shots in goal
for Delaware, but senior keeper Kate Quick tallied the victory with
10 saves for UMBC.
Delaware will next return to Rullo Stadium to face Oregon on
Thurs., March 25 at 4 p.m.
