Trombetta Ties RMU Records in Victory
from press release
The Robert Morris University Colonials took on Northeast
Conference foe Wagner on Sunday afternoon and stormed past the
Seahawks, 14-2, at Joe Walton Stadium. In the win, junior Ashley
Trombetta (Sykesville, Md. / Century) led the charge by tying a
Robert Morris single-game record for goals with six and points with
10, as she also chipped in four assists.
The win maintains the Colonials undefeated conference record at 2-0
and brings their overall record to 4-3, while the Seahawks drop to
0-2 in the league and 1-6 overall.
Sophomore Erin Finnegan (Allison Park, Pa. / Hampton) also put in a
strong performance with three goals, while senior Alana Beck (Carle
Place, N.Y. / Old Dominion) added two goals and one assist and
junior Lynette Gomez (Ocean, N.J. / Ocean Township) added two
scores.
Trombetta started off the contest with back-to-back unassisted
goals at the 1:50 and 4:55 marks to give RMU an early 2-0 lead.
Wagner responded with a goal by Krista Malayter to make it a one
goal game, but the Seahawk defense could not contain Finnegan who
answered back with three of RMU's next four goals. With 5:17 left
to play Teri Noll found an opening in RMU's net to make it a 6-2
game, but Beck scored her second goal of the contest with 3:54 left
to play to give the Colonials back their five goal lead.
Robert Morris did not let up in the second half and held the
Seahawks scoreless through the entire 30 minutes of play. Trombetta
played an outstanding second half and had a hand in all seven
goals. Sophomore Courtney Sicinski (Downingtown, Pa. / Downingtown
West) opened up the second frame with a goal at 2:13 off a
Trombetta assist. At 5:02, Trombetta scored an unassisted goal and
then stunned the Seahawks by scoring three more Colonial goals.
Gomez ended the game with two goals within the last six minutes
with Trombetta, once again, setting up the play on both goals.
Junior Erica Webb (Arnold, Md. / Broadneck) tallied 11 saves in the
win with an impressive .846 save percentage, while Alex Johnston
tallied 14 saves for the Seahawks.
The Colonials converted on 3-of-6 free position shots, while the
Seahawks were successful on just 1-of-5 opportunities.
Robert Morris returns to action on Friday, March 26 when it takes
on Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J. at 3:00 p.m.
