Fuchs, Kmiotek Fuel Sacred Heart Past Bryant
from press release
Sacred Heart sophomores Alicia Fuchs (Bay Shore, NY) and Kate
Kmiotek (Farmingville, NY) scored four goals apiece to lead the
Pioneers past Bryant, 17-8, in Northeast Conference play Sunday
afternoon. The Pioneers turned in another solid defensive
effort forcing 26 Bulldog turnovers as well as nine broken clears
(16-27) to improve to 2-0 in the NEC.
Sacred Heart (4-4, 2-0 NEC) got off to a fast start, winning the
first four draws of the game and running out to a 4-1 lead six
minutes in. Senior Cori Horelik (South Windsor, CT) scored
1:10 into the game off a feed from Fuchs, her first of three
assists. Horelik set up fellow senior Carissa Hauser (East
Northport, CT), her first of three markers, for a 2-0 lead three
minutes in. Kmiotek buried back-to-back 8meter free position
attempts for a 4-2 lead with 24:00 on the clock.
The Bulldogs (1-6, 1-2 NEC) scrapped together a three-goal rally
to tie the game at 4-4. Madeleine Pickett and Lauren Sheridan
scored just 19 seconds apart at 9:52 and 9:33 to pull the game
even. Fuchs put SHU back in front with her first goal of the
day off a feed from Hauser at 7:47. The Pioneers would tack
two more on in the final minute of the half to carry the momentum
in to the break, up 7-4. Hauser scored unassisted at 1:00 and
then earned a free-position attempt that she buried with 22 ticks
left before half.
Bryant wasted little time in cracking the scoreboard to open the
second stanza, scoring just 17 seconds in on an Allison Faiola
unassisted marker. The two teams would trade goals over the
first five minutes of the half before SHU would put some daylight
on the Bulldogs with a 4-1 run.
Senior Jackie Pierce (Cortlandt Manor, NY) buried a Fuchs feed at
20:37 and Sacred Heart would build a 13-7 led over the next 10
minutes of action. Fuchs hit on a pair around a second goal
from Horelik. Bryant’s Kayla Manzi pulled her team
within 13-8 at the 10:39 mark but SHU answered right back with a
senior Farra Coppola (Wantagh, NY) score at 9:05 and the Pioneers
would tack on three more before the final horn for a 17-8
victory.
Fuchs four goals and seven points marked a new career high for the
sophomore attacker. Hauser finished with three scores and a
pair of assists with six draw wins and a pair of grounders in the
win. Pierce added an assist to her totals and also finished
with five caused turnovers and a ground ball. Coppola totaled
two goals and an assist with four ground balls.
Senior goalkeeper Chelsea Wagner (Aurora, CO) made five saves in
earning the win. SHU outshot Bryant 41-18 in the win.
The Bulldogs got 11 saves from keeper Lauren Filippone while
Sheridan finished with three goals and an assist.
The Pioneers will hit the road next week heading to Wagner College
on Friday, March 26th for a 3:30 pm start.
