from press release
COLUMBUS, Ohio – Brittney Zerhusen scored
six goals and added an assist as the Ohio State women’s
lacrosse team defeated George Washington, 19-11, Saturday afternoon
at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium. Winners of three games in a row,
the Buckeyes are 5-2 on the season heading into their American
Lacrosse Conference opener against Northwestern at 7 p.m. Wednesday
in Columbus.
The Colonials fall to 2-7 on the year.
Zerhusen’s six goals stand as No. 3 all-time for single-game
goals and move the redshirt junior into the team leader in goals
with 20 through seven games this season. Alayna Markwordt and Jayme
Beard each added four scores, followed by three from Kelly Haggerty
and single tallies from Maghan Beaudrault and Gabby Capuzzi.
George Washington struck first, scoring the first goal 4:03 into
the contest, but Markwordt countered 18 seconds later to even the
score and start a 6-1 Buckeye scoring run that would stretch the
score to 6-2 over the first 12 minutes of the game. Zerhusen had a
pair of tallies in the first scoring spree, while Markwordt put up
two assists in addition to the initial equalizer.
After a pair of GW goals by Megan Seidman, Beard opened another
scoring spree for Ohio State that took the teams into halftime with
an 11-6 score.
The Buckeyes came out of the intermission with three-consecutive
goals for an eight-point differential, 14-6, with 24:11 to play.
Four goals from the Colonials brought them back to within four, but
the Buckeyes answered with five in a row, including two from
Zerhusen, to give them the largest lead of the game, 19-10, at the
5:59 mark.
Ohio State held a 35-20 advantage in shots and a 19-13 positive
margin in draw controls. The Colonials finished on top in
groundballs, 22-19.
