W&M Explodes for Win Over Virginia Tech
from press release
BLACKSBURG, Va. - The 18th-ranked William and
Mary lacrosse team jumped out to an early 4-0 lead against Virginia
Tech and never trailed en route to earning a 24-16 victory on
Saturday afternoon in Blacksburg, Va.
Juniors Grace Golden and Molly Wannen led the Tribe (4-3) with five
goals apiece, while senior Mary Zulty earned a hat trick with three
goals. Wannen also equaled a career high with six draw controls,
marking the second time in the last three contests that she has
posted the impressive figure.
“We really dominated the game today,” Head Coach
Christine Halfpenny said. “The offense did a nice job
controlling the game, and we worked through a lot of sets. We also
did a fantastic job on draw controls, and that was a key to earning
the victory.”
A score by Golden just 1:03 into the contest put W&M on the
board first, while goals by sophomore Stephanie Steinweg, Zulty and
Wannen during a 25-second span pushed the advantage to 4-0 with
23:26 showing.
While the Hokies (2-7) rallied back with three unanswered goals
during the next two minutes, the College responded with a 5-1 run
that was punctuated with Zulty’s second score of the
half.
Although Tech edged back by scoring two of the next three goals to
get within 10-6, W&M extended the margin to seven with a quick
3-0 spurt to lead 13-6 with three minutes remaining in the half.
Wannen ignited the run, while Golden found the back of the net
twice during the span.
The Hokies closed the half on a 5-3 run, but W&M still held a
comfortable 16-11 lead at the intermission.
As it did in the first half, the College opened the second stanza
with a 4-0 run to go ahead, 20-11. Junior Ashley Holofcener scored
twice during the stretch, while Steinweg and senior Katie Rees also
found the back of the net.
A 3-0 run later in the half, coming on two goals by Wannen and one
by Golden, extended W&M’s lead to 23-13 with 9:04
remaining, and Tech was unable to get closer than the final margin.
