Columbia Holds on to Beat Stony Brook

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Columbia led 7-4 at
halftime and held on for a 15-13 victory at Stony Brook on Saturday
afternoon in non-league action.
Columbia struck first one minute into the game when a pair of
first-years teamed up to give the Lions a 1-0 lead. Kacie
Johnson fed her classmate Olivia Mann who scored her first
collegiate goal 56 seconds into the game.
After the Seawolves tied it at 1-1 at 27:16, Columbia went on a
three-goal run to take a 4-1 lead on two unassisted tallies by
Taylor Gattinella and a goal by Brittany Shannon.
Victoria Gable cut the Lions run with a goal at 17:14, but Columbia
responded with two unanswered goals by Gabrielle Geronimos and
Frances Callaghan to go ahead 6-2 with 14:05 to play in the opening
half.
The Seawolves went on a run of their own with a pair of goals to
cut the lead to two, but Columbia closed out the half with Mann's
second goal of the game to take a 7-4 lead into the break.
The Lions held a slim 15-13 advantage in shots after the first
half, while Karlee Blank had four saves in goal.
Columbia picked up right where they left off in the second half
scoring three more goals to push its lead to 10-4 with 24:40 to go
in the game. Mann struck first followed by Shannon with
unassisted tallies at 27:32 and 26:39, before Callaghan picked up
her second goal of the game.
Trailing by six, Stony Brook went on a run of their own to cut the
lead to four with a pair of goals by Melissa Cook, making the score
10-6. Stony Brook cut the deficit to a single goal twice at
10-9 and 12-11 but each time, Columbia was able to gain
seperation.
Brittany Shannon's third goal of the game made it 15-11 with 5:55
left to play and although Stony Brook scored twice late in the
game, the Lions held on for the 15-13 win and improved their record
to 3-2.
