Breiner Leads Oregon Past Cincy
from press release
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon lacrosse team got
back into the black this season, improving its record to 4-3 on the
year with a 14-8 victory over Cincinnati on a gorgeous Saturday
afternoon at Pape' Field. The Bearcats fell to 2-2 in 2010 with the
loss.
The Ducks took an early 3-0 lead and head coach Jen Larsen's squad
was up 8-2 at halftime. Cincinnati rallied to start the second
half, scoring three early goals to just one from the Ducks but
Oregon put away the visitors with three straight scores over a five
minutes span to take a 13-6 lead with 6:59 left in the game.
The Ducks were paced on the offensive end by a familiar face, as
Alex Breiner once again led the charge. The junior scored a
team-high five goals and placed seven of her eight shots on goal.
Jana Drummond netted four goals, also placing seven of her eight
shots on goal. The seven shots on goal for both players was a
season-high for the Ducks.
Briener now has a team-best 27 points on the season with 20 goals
and a team-high seven assists. Drummond leads the Ducks with 21
scores this year.
With a large late lead Oregon was able to play 11 reserves,
including freshman Brittany Hushion who made her collegiate debut
and snagged one ground ball.
Freshman Salliebeth Finnegan had a career day in the net, making a
season-high 14 saves and surrendering just eight goals. Her
previous career-high was 10 saves at No. 17 William and Mary.
Finnegan improved her personal record to 3-3 while dropping her
goals against average to 11.82.
Cincinnati got two goals from Natalie Starvaggi and Maddie Fink
while goalkeeper Katherine Russo made 15 saves but allowed 14
goals. Russo's 15 saves were the most by and Oregon opponent this
season.
