Party Like It's '78: No. 5 Penn Blanks St. Joe's
from press release
PHILADELPHIA - Penn did something it hadn't accomplished
since 1978 on Wednesday - shut out an opponent. The No. 5 Quakers
held visiting Saint Joseph's scoreless at Franklin Field, downing
the Hawks 14-0.
The last time Penn shutout an opponent was April 15, 1978 when the
Quakers blanked Yale, 4-0. Since then, five Presidents have taken
office, the Phillies and Red Sox have each won two World Series
titles and every member of the current Penn squad was born.
10 different players had at least one point for the Quakers, led by
Erin Brennan's five. The sophomore scored three goals and added a
pair of assists, giving her 11 points over her last two games.
Bridget Waclawik added a career-high four points with two goals and
two assists. The assists were the first two helpers of her career.
She was one of four Quakers with a two-goal game, joined by Ali
DeLuca, Maddie Poplawski and Giulia Giordano.
For DeLuca, her two goals moved her past Rachel Manson into second
place all-time at Penn in career goals. DeLuca now has 117 career
goals and trails Penn's career leader, Sherry Marcantonio, who
heads the list with 129. DeLuca also broke a tie with Manson for
third on Penn's career points list, moving into third place all
alone with 159. DeLuca is now six behind Lisa Romig's 165 for
second.
Other goal scorers for Penn were Caroline Bunting, Carolyn Pollard
and Megan Smith. Courtney Lubbe and Kelly McCallion each finished
with one assist. For McCallion, it was her first collegiate
point.
Emily Szelest made three saves in 43:30 of playing time to earn the
win and lower her season GAA to 5.55. Emily Leitner made one save
in her 16:30 of action.
The Quakers were simply too much for Saint Joseph's, outdistancing
the Hawks in every way. Penn outshot the Hawks, 27-7. The Quakers
came up with 27 ground balls to SJU's 14. On draw controls, Penn
tripled up the Hawks, 12-4. While turnovers were close, with Penn
committing 25 to SJU's 27, the Red and Blue were more active in
causing the miscues, finishing with 17 caused turnovers to the
Hawks' seven.
Penn scored twice in the first 4:18 to take a 2-0 lead on goals
from Giordano and Poplawski. For Poplawski, the goal was her fifth
free position strike of the season. Brennan and Waclawik added
goals midway through the period to extend Penn's lead to 4-0. A
pair of goals from Smith and Brennan 39 seconds apart in the final
three minutes of the first half gave Penn a 6-0 lead at the break.
The Quakers spread the offense out in the second half, with seven
different scorers accounting for the eight goals.
The 5-1 (1-0, Ivy) Quakers head to New Haven on Saturday for an Ivy
League game at Yale (2-3, 0-0 Ivy) at 1 p.m.
