Johnson Nets Five; Hoyas No Match for Terps
from press release
COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Sophomore Karri Ellen
Johnson netted five scores and No. 2 Maryland put up 20 goals for
the second consecutive game as the Terps ran away with a 20-11 win
against No. 7 Georgetown Wednesday.
Three of Johnson's five goals came in the opening minutes of the
second stanza to provide Maryland (7-0, 2-0 ACC) some breathing
room and a six-goal cushion after an even-played first half. The
Hoyas outscored Maryland 5-2 in the first 11 minutes of the game
before goals by Kate Faas, Laura Merrifield, and Brandi Jones tied
the game and a Brittany Jones score at 11:47 gave the Terps the
eventual game-winner.
The Terrapin defense stepped up the intensity in the second half,
allowing only five Hoya goals in the period. Maryland trumped
Georgetown 23-10 in the draw control category, led by five from
junior Brandi Jones.
"It was a hard-fought game both ways and I thought we responded
really well and were able to keep our composure throughout the
game," head coach Cathy Reese said. "We made a few defensive
adjustments at the half and really did a good job of taking care of
business on that end of the field in the final 30 minutes."
Johnson continued her goal-scoring streak, scoring in all 29 games
she has appeared in since her arrival to College Park a year ago.
Caitlyn McFadden added five points on three goals and two assists.
The senior Tewaaraton nominee also scooped up two ground balls and
three draw controls and moved her streak to 31-straight games with
at least one point. Merrifield added two goals as Maryland toppled
its fifth nationally-ranked opponent this season.
Maryland, which continues to hold its opponent to a mere 6.57
goals per game, returns to conference play Saturday with a match
against Boston College at noon.
