James Madison Rocks No. 13 Tigers in OT

PRINCETON, N.J. - Kim Griffin scored the golden goal to
give the James Madison women's lacrosse team a 13-12 double
overtime win over Princeton on Wednesday, March 17 at Princeton
Stadium.
The No. 13-ranked Tigers had a 6-4 lead at the end of the first
half but the Dukes stormed back to score seven goals in the second
to Princeton's five to force the overtime. In the first overtime,
JMU looked like it walk away with the win when Mary Kate Lomady
scored an eight-meter goal at 3:30. The Dukes tried to play keep
away for the next 2:30 but sent the ball back to its keeper Morgan
Kelly who inadvertently turned the ball over when an errant pass
went out of bounds. Getting the ball near midfield, the Tigers
raced down the field and freshman Caroline Rehfuss found junior
Lizzy Drumm open to score and tie the game with five seconds to
play in the first overtime.
During the sudden-victory overtime, Princeton had a free-position
attempt but didn't have a clear shot at the net with two defenders
waiting to pounce. A pass on the attempt was swatted away and JMU
came up with the ground ball and had a good clear down the field
leading Griffin to score the goal exactly two minutes into the
overtime.
The teams each finished the game with 29 shots and 19 ground balls
apiece. JMU had a slim 16-13 edge in draw controls.
Princeton took the lead on the opening goal and had a 3-1 lead less
than 10 minutes in, before JMU scored two within 1:16 to make it a
3-3 game. The Tigers answered back going on a 4-1 run to close out
the first half with the 6-4 lead.
Princeton made it 8-5 at 26:17 of the second half but the Dukes
scored four straight to take the 9-8 lead with 13:45 left to play.
Drumm would even the game with an unassisted goal at 12:24, and the
team would trade goal one minute apart. An eight-meter goal by
sophomore Cassie Pyle at 4:34 put the Tigers head 11-10 before
Ariel Lane tallied the equalizer at 3:48.
Lomady led the Dukes with four goals and one assist for five
points. Both Griffin and Lane had four points, with Lane getting
three goals and one assist and Griffin getting all of her points
via goals. Casey Ancarrow and Caitlin Sullivan each had two-point
efforts. Goalkeeper Kelly finished the game with eight saves to
keep her team undefeated at 6-0.
Drumm matched her career best with six goals and one assist for
seven points. Pyle and Rehfuss both had two points and six other
Tigers made their way onto the score sheet with one point.
Tochihara had 12 saves on the afternoon, tying her season-best for
saves in a game.
Princeton falls to 2-3 overall and will host No. 6 Virginia on
Saturday, March 20 at noon at Princeton Stadium.
