St. Mary's Scores First Eight to Beat Iona

MORAGA, Calif. - The Saint Mary's women's
lacrosse team held off a late surge from visiting Iona to earn
their third win of the season. The Gaels were propelled by an
8-0 scoring outburst to begin the game, leading the charge for SMC
was freshman Jillian Chong who scored a career-high four goals on
the afternoon.
Saint Mary's (3-3) came out hungry and opened the game playing
tight defense, limiting Iona to just 13 shots on the half.
The Gaels however, let the shots fly, fueled by an 8-0 run to begin
the game. Katie Nelson recorded her fifth goal of the season
to put SMC out front with 28:48 on the clock. During that run
SMC also got a goal from Rachel Raimondi who notched her first
collegiate goal.
Iona (1-4) eventually got on the board with a five goal run of
their own, as Emily Taddei found the back of the net with 7:47 to
play in the half. Also notching a goal for Iona in that run
was Kasey Hughes, Natalie Finnerty and Brittney Mabus.
Mahony notched her second goal of the half with 34 seconds to play
to put Saint Mary's' back out front 11-6 at the break. In the
second half Saint Mary's looked to continue their goal scoring
ways, as Abbie Coleman notched her only goal of the afternoon with
24:34 on the clock, she scored on a one-timer from Mariah Walk.
With 10:29 to play in the game Walk scored the third goal of the
afternoon putting SMC out front 16-10, from there the momentum took
a swing in the favor of Iona who scored five unanswered goals to
pull within one. Leading all scorers on the day was Iona's
Caitlyn Collins who notched six goals and two assists for eight
points. She notched three goals in the final four minutes to
give the Gaels a scare.
However it would not be enough as goal keeper Whitney Campitiello
earned her first win of the season with a save in the closing
minutes to seal the win for Saint Mary's. For the day
Campitiello notched a career-high nine saves on the afternoon,
while picking up two groundballs.
