Quick Start Lifts No. 17 Loyola Over No. 20 Rutgers

BALTIMORE - Loyola University Maryland scored
the game's first nine goals, and the 17th-ranked Greyhounds cruised
to a BIG EAST Conference win, 18-6 over No. 20 Rutgers in the
Greyhounds' first game at the Ridley Athletic Complex. The 18 goals
were a season-high for the `Hounds.
Mary Heneberry scored Loyola's first three goals, while Meg Decker
and Joanna Dalton each added two goals in the opening run for
Loyola (5-3 overall, 1-0 BIG EAST).
Up 9-0, Rutgers got on the board with an Annie McGinley goal 7:41
before halftime, but Emily Gibson scored less than four minutes
later with a quick-stick goal off a Kelly Quinlan pass from behind
the goal.
Mary Cryan scored with 2:33 to go in the half for Rutgers (5-2,
0-1), cutting Loyola's lead to 10-2. Grace Gavin and Cara
Filippelli, however, scored with less than a minute on the clock,
giving Loyola a 12-2 lead at the break.
Heneberry finished with five goals, while Decker and Gavin each had
three. Joanna Dalton, Filippelli and Gibson each scored a pair of
goals as well. Heneberry's five goals and point total was the most
she scored since she tallied six goals against Delaware on March 5,
2008.
Decker also had a pair of assists to tie Heneberry for the
team-lead with five points. Gavin added an assist, and Gibson also
tallied two to record four points on the night.
Kerry Stoothoff had another solid outing in the cage, recording
four saves in just under 47 minutes of play. Meg Steffe played just
over 13 minutes, but did not record a save.
Junior captain Abby Rehfuss also had a solid all-around game with a
goal and a career-high eight ground balls, shattering her old
record of four. She also tallied a pair of draw controls and caused
two turnovers.
The reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, Ana Heneberry
led the team with four caused turnovers as Loyola held Rutgers to a
season-low six goals.
The victory was the Greyhounds third straight and the fifth time in
eight games they held their opponent to under ten goals.
