Colgate Edges George Mason 9-7

FAIRFAX, Va. – Colleen Bubnack (Syracuse,
N.Y.) scored consecutive goals in the second half to give Colgate
the lead for good as the Raiders completed their Spring Break sweep
of the Washington, D.C. Area with a 9-7 victory at George Mason,
Tuesday evening in women’s lacrosse action. The Raiders
downed American 11-9 Saturday.
After the Patriots, who slipped to 2-4 overall, scored two goals to
open the second half to knot the game at 5-5, the junior gave the
Raiders the lead with 27:47 remaining, just 19 seconds after GMU
got the equalizer. Bubnack returned to the scoring column
nearly three minutes later as she took a feed from Meghan Lawler
(Liverpool, N.Y.) and found the back of the cage for her 13th of
the season at 24:56.
Holding a 7-6 advantage, Colgate put the game out of reach with
goals from Lawler and Katie Sullivan (Cockeysville, Md.) with 15:41
and 10:46 left respectively to build its largest lead of the
contest. The Patriots scored the final goal with 1:41
remaining.
The Raiders opened scoring 1:08 into the game as Courtney Miller
(Chappaqua, N.Y.) scored the first of her two goals. GMU
answered with back to back goals to take its first and only lead at
2-1. Lawler’s first of two scores on the day with 12:23
left squared the game at 2-2 before Quincey Spagnoletti
(Baldwinsville, N.Y.) gave the Raiders a 3-2 margin shortly after
with a successful free position attempt. After the Patriots
tied the game at 3-3, Colgate took a two-goal lead into
intermission on two goals from Sullivan and Miller in the closing
five minutes.
Lawler finished with two goals and a pair of assists. The
senior moved into third on the Raiders’ all-time assist list
(59) and now stands nine assists away from overtaking Judi Conry
for second. Miller finished with a three-point performance on
two goals and an assist. The sophomore also collected a
team-high four groundballs.
Christina Roa (Potomac, Md.) came up big in net for the
Raiders. The sophomore net minder posted 13 stops in the
victory.
GMU was paced by Madalyn Jamison’s two-goal, four-assist outing.
