Seven-Goal Run Sends Drexel by La Salle
from press release
PHILADELPHIA -- Drexel scored seven straight
goals to improve to 7-1 on the season as the Dragons downed city
rival La Salle, 11-7. Becca Drylie-Perkins poured in four goals
while Whitney Johnson made nine saves and allowed just four goals
in a shade under 49 minutes in the net. Three players scored a pair
of goals for the Explorers who had their record evened at 3-3.
La Salle opened the game with a goal in the first two minutes as
the Explorers' leading scorer Jill Davis gave the home squad an
early lead. Drylie-Perkins responded with her first two goals with
the second coming on a pass from Danielle Iacono with 16:41
remaining in the period. Stefany McKee knotted the game at 2-2 but
the Explorers would not score again for more than 31 minutes of
action. Katie Lawson gave Drexel a lead it would not relinquish
when the senior connected on a free-position shot for her 25 goal
of the season. With less than five minutes remaining in the half,
Charlotte Wood and Kelli Joran scored unassisted goals with Joran's
score coming with just 22 seconds remaining.
The Dragons kept the offensive pressure on in the second half as
Katie Blazer scored after four minutes of action in the second
period. Just 15 seconds later, freshman Alyse Maiden tallied an
unassisted goal with Sam Berger tacking on another goal 65 seconds
after Maiden's tally. Emily Kane took a Maiden pass to complete the
seven-goal run and hand the Dragons' a 9-2 lead with 22:26
remaining in the game. The Explorers halted the run as Lauren
McDermott scored two consecutive goals. Drylie-Perkins got the
Dragons one of the goals back with 8:30 remaining but the Explorers
scored three straight goals on free-position shots to bring the
margin closer as time wound down. The final free-position shot cut
Drexel's lead to 10-7 with 2:29 left but Drylie-Perkins picked up
her fourth goal of the game a minute later to ice the game.
Drexel held slim advantages in both shots and draw controls as the
Dragons fired 26 shots to the Explorers' 21, while Drexel won 12 of
the game's 21 draws. Johnson's nine saves came the game's first
48:56 as she gave way to Rachael Behrndt who stopped three shots
and allowed three goals. Megan Corliss made eight stops while
absorbing the loss. Nicole Musto earned a team-high three draw
controls and also caused a pair of turnovers.
