Monmouth Gets First Win of Season in OT

PHILADELPHIA-- Monmouth University's women's
lacrosse team (1-5) got its first win of the 2010 season on Sunday,
upending Saint Joseph's (2-5) in overtime by a score of 10-7.
With the Hawks trailing by one, sophomore Olivia Salata (Broomall,
Pa./Archbishop Carroll) scored her third goal of the game with 3:53
remaining in regulation to send the Hawks into their second
consecutive overtime contest. Monmouth controlled the six
minutes of overtime, scoring three goals to seal its first win of
the season. Senior Shawn Evans (Moorestown, N.J./Moorestown)
tallied the eventual game-winner at the 1:37 mark of the first
overtime with Carissa Franzi (Fairfield, N.J./West Essex) scoring
an insurance goal with 12 seconds left in the frame. Captain
Ali Pollock (Watervliet, N.Y./Shaker) chipped in the game's final
goal in the second OT to finish the scoring at 10-7.
"I think we've been building on all the little parts of our game
and it all came together," said Head Coach Denise Wescott.
"The defense is playing well together and protecting the
middle. They worked hard to protect the cage.
Offensively, we moved the ball well, found our open players to beat
double teams and were able to create space. It was a great
win. Having lost on Friday in overtime, I felt that when this
game went into overtime we would not be denied [the win]."
Salata and Evans gave the Hawks a 2-0 lead early but St. Joseph's
would score five of the next six goals to take a 6-4 lead going
into halftime. Pollock got the Blue & White to within one
with an early goal in the second frame and Salata tied the game at
the 12:38 mark with her second goal. Saint Joseph's Jenn
Peter's regained the lead for her squad two minutes later but
Salata's career-high third goal with just under four minutes to
play sent the game into overtime at 7-7.
Pollock and Salata finished the game with three goals each, while
Evans chipped in a pair of goals and an assist for three
points. The victory was the first for new Monmouth head coach
Denise Wescott.
SJU's seven goals were the least allowed by the Monmouth defense in
2010. MU netminder Kirby Mundorf (Catonsville, Md./Seton
Keogh) registered five saves in her first career-victory, while
Labarbera has seven saves in 66 minutes of work. For the
third straight game Monmouth led in draw controls, earning a 12-8
advantage. The Hawks also held a 26-21 advantage in shots,
and were a season-best 4-6 in free position shots.
The Hawks return home on Friday, March 19 when the host Mount St.
Mary's in their NEC opener.
