Dominant Second Half Propels Duquense over Bucknell
from press release
LEWISBURG, Pa. -- It was a tale of two halves
Sunday afternoon at rain-soaked Graham Field, as the Bucknell
women's lacrosse team outplayed Duquesne for the first 30 minutes,
only to see Duquesne outscore them 10-1 in the second half en route
to a 15-8 decision. Julia Braun (Tomkins Cove, N.Y./North Rockland)
scored three goals for the Bison, Becca Devine (Arlington, Va./St.
Stephen's & St. Agnes) had two goals and an assist, and
freshman Madison Hurwitz (Southampton, Pa./Council Rock South)
picked up the first two goals of her career.
Kat McNish tallied five goals and three assists and Katie Rekart
had five goals and two assists to lead the Dukes (2-5).
Bucknell played very well in the first half, erasing an early 1-0
deficit with three straight goals, two coming from Devine and
another from Braun, who ran it in from midfield after an Allie
Mongan (Malvern, Pa./Villa Maria Academy) takeaway.
The Dukes answered with a 3-0 run, with Rekart scoring twice and
assisting McNish on another, but the latter part of the first half
was all Bison. The home team scored four in a row to go up 7-4.
Michelle Milot (Basking Ridge, N.J./Ridge) started the spurt with
15:50 left in the half, finishing one of Laura Van Schaack's
(Winnetka, Ill./New Trier) two assists on the day. Moments later,
Braun singlehandedly produced the go-ahead goal. She earned the
draw control then drew a foul near midfield. On the restart, she
sprinted all the way behind the Duquesne cage, circled back in
front and scored to make it 5-4.
Hurwitz's first career goal came off a pretty passing combination.
Paige Cobbs (Annapolis, Md./St. Mary's) brought the ball into the
offensive end on a clear and hit Devine on the left wing. Devine
then pinballed a perfect pass in front to a wide-open Hurwitz for
the score. With 5:06 left in the half Braun scored her third of the
day on a free-position shot, chasing Duquesne goalie Caitlin
Cardicci from the game with just one save and seven goals
against.
The Dukes got one back 2:09 before intermission on an unassisted
goal by McNish. After Bucknell scored seven goals on 10 first-half
shots, the momentum completely shifted in the second half, as
Duquesne scored 10 times on 13 shots.
Sarah Cates put one in only 24 seconds into the half, then Rekart
tied it 62 seconds later. Two more goals in rapid succession from
Cailin Colegrove and Rekart made it 9-7 Duquesne. Bucknell briefly
pulled back within one on Hurwitz's goal with 21:49 left, but
McNish scored two in a row and the Dukes scored the game's final
six goals.
Bucknell turned the ball over 14 times and managed only three shots
in the second half as Duquesne amped up the defensive pressure. The
Dukes outshot the Bison 25-13 in the game.
Alyssa DeLorenz (Garland, Texas/Plano East) was a major reason why
Bucknell had the lead at the end of the first half, as she made six
saves. But she could only muster three in the second stanza as
Duquesne took one point-blank shot after another. Of the Dukes' 25
shots in the game, 24 were on frame.
In addition to her three goals, Braun had four draw controls and
three caused turnovers.
Liz Walker played the final 35:06 in goal for Duquesne, picking up
the win after making two saves with one goal allowed.
Bucknell will be back in action next Saturday at noon against
Patriot League rival American.
