Cal Hosts No. 11 Notre Dame on Saturday

California battles another nonconference, national power
when it hosts No. 11 Notre Dame at noon on Saturday, March 13. The
Golden Bears have a 1-3 record (0-1 in the Mountain Pacific Sports
Federation), while the Irish have a 2-1 record (0-0 Big East).
Cal has a 0-6 mark in the all-time series with Notre Dame, which
defeated the Bears 20-4 last season in Berkeley.
Scouting the Golden Bears
Cal earned its first win of the season when it topped
Davidson, 14-9, on March 2 at Memorial Stadium. Senior midfielder
Alex Tickner and sophomore midfielder Vail Horn led all scorers
with four points and four goals each. Senior midfielder Alyse
Kennedy, who collected two goals and one assist, against Davidson,
leads Cal with 11 points and eight goals.
Junior goalkeeper Allie Shropshire, who has a 14.25 goals-against
average in four starts, paces the Bears in ground balls (14), while
freshman midfielder Camilla Hayes leads Cal with 11 draw
controls.
Theresa Sherry, the 2008 MPSF Coach of the Year, is in her third
season as Cal's head coach.
Scouting the Irish
Notre Dame is coming off a 12-8 upset loss to 20th-ranked
Dartmouth on March 7 at the Irish team's new Arlotta Stadium.
Junior midfielder Kailene Abt led Notre Dame with three goals and
one assist in the loss. Abt leads the Irish in goals (8) and is
tied for the team high in points (9) with sophomore attacker Maggie
Tamasitis (2 goals, 7 assists). The latter
paces her squad in assists.
Freshman goalkeeper Ellie Hilling has an 11.33 GAA in three starts
and leads her team with six ground balls. Junior
midfielder/defender Jackie Doherty paces the Irish in draw controls
(8).
Tracy Coyne is in her 14th year as Notre Dame's head coach.

MPSF Tournament Champion Earns NCAA Play-In Berth
For the first time in the eight-year history of the
conference, the MPSF
Tournament winner will earn a berth in an NCAA play-in game, vs.
the
Atlantic-10 champion. The 2010 MPSF champion will host this
year's
play-in.
Next Time
Cal starts a four-game road trip in Connecticut, where it
takes on
Quinnipiac at noon PT on March 19 and Fairfield at 9 a.m. PT on
March
21.
