No. 18 William & Mary Hands Navy First Loss

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. -- The 18th-ranked William
and Mary lacrosse team handed Navy its first loss of the season
with a 14-9 victory on Wednesday in Annapolis, Md.
W&M (3-2) held Navy (7-1) well below its season average of 17.3
goals per game, while the Tribe’s 14 goals were the most
surrendered by the Mids this season. Navy entered the contest
allowing just 5.9 goals per game.
Senior Mary Zulty recorded her third straight hat trick, and her
fourth of the season, with four goals and an assist. Junior Ashley
Holofcener also totaled five points with a pair of goals and three
assists.
Sophomore Sally Roberts and freshman Kyrstin Mackrides both posted
three-point efforts with two goals and an assist, while sophomore
Stephanie Steinweg recorded two goals and a career-high five ground
balls.
Defensively, All-American junior Sarah Jonson tallied two caused
turnovers and four ground balls, while sophomore Denise Lenihan
earned two caused turnovers and two ground balls. En route to
holding Navy to a season-low nine goals, junior Emily Geary came up
big with eight saves. With the effort, she increased her career
total to 389 and moves into third place on the Tribe's all-time
list.
While neither team scored during the opening five minutes, junior
Molly Wannen put the Tribe on the scoreboard when she found the
back of the cage with 24:52 showing.
Although Navy evened the score on a goal by Danielle Vivonetto less
than two minutes later, W&M answered with a 3-0 run to build a
4-1 lead. Zulty ignited the run with a free position goal at the
19:27 mark, while Mackrides scored off an assist from Holofcener
with 18:22 left in the half. Holofcener finished off the stretch
just 18 seconds later when she scored on a free position
opportunity.
Navy countered the Tribe’s run with four unanswered goals and
took its first lead of the game, 5-4, following a score by Madison
Bell with 4:28 showing.
A goal by Steinweg with 2:13 remaining knotted the score at 5-5, as
the teams went into halftime tied.
Both teams traded a pair of goals during the opening minutes of the
second half, as Zulty and Holofcener provided scores for the
Tribe.
With the count knotted at 7-7, W&M rattled off a pivotal 4-0
run to break the game open. Junior Grace Golden scored off a feed
from Mackrides with 23:27 remaining to start the run, while
Mackrides, Zulty and Steinweg also scored during the stretch.
Following a timeout, Navy scored back-to-back goals to cut the
margin to 11-9 with just under 10 minutes remaining. However,
W&M held the Mids scoreless the rest of the way and utilized
two goals from Roberts and one from Zulty to preserve the
victory.
The Tribe will return to action when it hosts No. 8 Virginia next
Wednesday at 7 p.m.
