Mar 7, 2010 BU Remains Unbeaten with Triumph of Tribe
from press release
BOSTON -- Senior Traci Landy and sophomore
Hannah Frey combined for nine goals to help the No. 12 Boston
University lacrosse team post a 15-10 victory over No. 16 William
& Mary on Sunday afternoon at Nickerson Field. The Terriers
broke a 4-4 tie by embarking on an 11-3 run spanning the halves to
help them improve to 3-0 on the season.
Three Terriers shared the game high in points with five, as Landy
tallied five goals, Frey put up four goals and an assist and senior
Xan Weitzel earned five assists to match the career high she set in
last year's double-overtime win against the Tribe.
Senior Rachel Klein made a season-high nine saves in goal for BU,
which won 17 of the contest's 27 draws and oushot William &
Mary, 29-25.
The Tribe (2-2) was paced by a four-point performance by junior
Ashley Holofcener (1g, 3a). Senior Mary Zulty added three
second-half goals and junior goalkeeper Emily Geary registered
eight saves.
William & Mary opened in the scoring in the first minute of
play and also held leads of 2-1 and 3-2 before the Terriers got
consecutive goals from Landy and Frey to take their first lead at
4-3 with 13:30 left in the opening stanza.
After the Tribe tied the game at 4-4 just over a minute later, BU
reeled off four straight goals to kick off the decisive run and
take a lead they would not relinquish.
Freshman Kristen Mogavero scored her second goal of the contest -
and her career - with 14:31 left in the second half to give the
Terriers their largest lead of the day at 15-7.
The Tribe scored the final three goals of the contest, beginning
with two from Zulty before junior Grace Golden scored her second of
two goals on the day with 2:33 remaining to cap the scoring and
create the 15-10 final.
W&M held an 18-12 advantage in ground balls and committed 13
turnovers to BU's 16. Each team caused 10 turnovers, including a
game-high five by Golden. Juniors Rachel Collins and Corcoran
Downey each caused two turnovers for the Terriers.
BU now set its sights on its spring break trip, beginning with a
contest at No. 6 Duke on Wednesday (March 10). Game time is set for
4 p.m.
