Denver Edges California in Double Overtime

BERKELEY, Calif. – University of Denver
women’s lacrosse senior midfielder Ali Flury (Arnold, Md.)
had a hat trick and two assists, including one on a sudden victory
goal by sophomore defender Melissa Maier (Farmingdale, N.Y.) in
double overtime, as the Pioneers beat Cal 11-10 in Mountain Pacific
Sports Federation action on Friday afternoon.
Denver (8-4, 2-0 MPSF) jumped to an early lead with a 4-1 run to
open the game and took an 8-4 advantage into halftime.
However, Cal (3-7, 0-2 MPSF) opened the second half on a 4-0 run to
tie the game at 8-8 with 16:01 remaining.
Flury reclaimed DU’s lead just under four minutes later,
converting a free position shot.
After Cal tied the game again with 4:29 left in regulation, it took
just 20 seconds for Flury to put Denver back in the lead.
Cal’s Alyse Kennedy, who led the Bears with three goals,
knotted the game at 10-10 with 3:01 on the clock.
The teams battled in a defensive stalemate through the first
overtime with sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Harman (Boyertown, Pa.)
making a save on a Cal free position attempt, the only shot by
either team during the first overtime.
In the second overtime, Cal’s Allie Welsh took a close shot
from the left wing, but Harman made the save and senior defender
Natasha Davies (Annapolis, Md.) picked up the ground ball.
With 4:09 on the clock, Flury fed Maier who buried a shot for the
game-winner.
Sophomore Kara Secora (Denver, Colo.) also had three goals for the
Pioneers, while sophomore Lauren Ciccomascolo (Ladera Ranch,
Calif.) scored a goal and had a pair of assists. Reigning MPSF
Player of the Week Lexi Sanders (Greenwood Village, Colo.) added a
goal and an assist.
The Pioneers return home for the next three games, beginning with
UC Davis on April 9 and No. 11 Stanford on April 11.
