Maryland Dusts off Colgate in First Round

Kerri Ellen Johnson and Sara Mollison each scored three goals as
second-ranked Maryland posted a convincing 20-4 victory over
Colgate in the opening round of the NCAA Division I Women's
Lacrosse Tournament, Sunday afternoon at the UMD Field Hockey and
Lacrosse complex. The Raiders' season came to a close at
14-5.
The Terrapins, who remained unblemished and improved to 20-0
overall, scored four times in the opening five minutes and never
looked back. Maryland got on the board 39 seconds into the
contest as Johnson netted her first of the game. The freshman
had a part in all four of the Terps' opening goals.
At 16:58, Alex Mavris scored her third of the year to up the Terps'
advantage to 10-0. The clock moved the rest of the first half
as UMD gradually upped the lead and raced into intermission with a
15-0 advantage.
The Raiders tallied the opening goal of the second half as Molly
Carroll connected for her 15th score of the year with 28:15 left in
the game. The senior broke in from the right side and beat
goalie Lynne Cooper high to the stick side.
After Maryland netted back-to-back goals, the Raiders posted their
second goal of the half as freshman Courtney Miller found the back
of the net with 14:07 left after converting a successful free
position shot for her 37th tally of the season. Down 19-2,
Ashley Didio broke inside with 5:08 remaining and beat Cooper low
for her 32nd goal of the year. The senior closed her career
with 116 goals and 142 points, which ranks seventh and 10th
respectively at Colgate.
After Jenny Collins netted the 20th goal for the Terps with 1:48
left, Colgate closed the scoring as Maddie Kearns, the
Patriot League's Defensive Player of the Year, accounted for her
14th tally of the season. Maryland won the ensuing draw
control and ran out the remaining minute of the contest.
