W&M Wins Colonial Regular Season Crown

NORFOLK, Va. - The William and Mary lacrosse team
captured its second consecutive regular season conference title
with a 20-10 victory at No. 17 Old Dominion on Thursday evening.
The top-seeded Tribe will host fourth-seeded Towson in the Colonial
Athletic Association Tournament semifinals next Thursday, while
second-seeded Delaware will square off against third-seeded Old
Dominion in the other semifinal game at Albert-Daly Field. Game
times will be determined on Friday.
Nearly the entire second half was played with a running clock, as
the Tribe (10-6, 6-1) built a 10-goal lead early in the period. The
20 goals were the most scored against the Lady Monarchs (11-4, 5-2)
this season and were 10 more than ODU had allowed per game entering
the contest.
Sophomore Maggie Anderson totaled a game-high five goals to lead a
group of six W&M players who recorded multi-goal efforts.
Sophomores Grace Golden and Molly Wannen also came up big, as both
registered four points apiece on three goals and one assist.
The College wasted little time taking control of the game, as it
jumped out to a 3-0 lead before ODU could even register a shot.
Anderson put W&M on the scoreboard first with an unassisted
goal less than two minutes into play, while Holofcener scored off a
pass from senior Julia Martin with 26:54 showing. Junior
Katie Rees completed the run less than a minute later with an
unassisted goal.
Although ODU rattled off a pair of goals to narrow the margin to
just one, 3-2, with 20:41 left in the half, Wannen tallied a pair
of quick scores to push the lead back to three.
A goal by Old Dominion's Saratu Dodo with 16:05 showing narrowed
the gap to 5-3, but W&M broke the contest open by scoring eight
of the next nine goals to take a commanding 13-4 lead with less
than two minutes remaining in the half. Rees ignited the run with a
free position goal at the 15:33 mark, while Golden and Anderson
found the back of the cage in the next 1:08.
Zulty and Anderson added to the impressive stretch with free
position scores as W&M pushed the run to 5-0 and led 10-3 with
11:31 remaining in the half. ODU ended its scoreless drought
shortly thereafter, but the College countered with three more
unanswered goals - coming from Holofcener, Wannen and Golden - to
complete the game-altering stretch.
ODU's Ashley Kellogg scored late in the half, but the Tribe held a
comfortable 13-5 lead at the intermission.
As it did in the first half, the Tribe continued to dominate in the
second half and scored four answered goals to begin the period.
Anderson scored off a pass from Rees just 48 seconds into the
frame, while sophomore Sarah Jonson's goal on a free position shot
pushed the lead to 15-5. Martin provided assists on scores by
Golden and Holofcener to finish off the run.
W&M held the Lady Monarchs scoreless for the opening 17:29 of
the second half and extended its lead to as many as 13 en route to
earning the victory and clinching its second consecutive regular
season league title.
