Dalton Powers No. 12 BU Past No. 16 Dartmouth
from press release
BOSTON - Senior Sarah Dalton scored seven goals to lead the 12th-ranked Boston University lacrosse team to a 15-8 triumph over 16th-ranked Dartmouth on Wednesday evening at Nickerson Field. Dalton scored her 71st goal of the season in the contest, matching the BU single-season record that she set last year. The Terriers improved to 12-3 with their 10th straight win.
Junior Erica Baumgartner tallied eight points in the game, netting three goals to go with five assists for the Terriers. Classmate Traci Landy also recorded a hat trick, while junior McKinley Curro notched five points (1g, 4a).
Freshmen Kirsten Goldberg scored three goals to lead the Big Green, who fell to 7-6 this season. Sophomore Greta Meyer and freshman Sarah Parks each scored a pair of goals as well.
Dalton wasted no time in putting the Terriers on the board first with a goal 37 seconds into the match. It took 10 minutes for another shot to find the twine when Parks evened the score with a free-position shot. Baumgartner assisted on goals by Landy and Dalton less than a minute apart to give BU a 3-1 lead that it never relinquished with 17:16 to go in the first.
After Goldberg scored to bring the Big Green back within one, the Terriers shut down the Dartmouth offense from the midpoint of the opening frame until halftime while scoring six unanswered goals. Dalton and Curro made it a 5-2 lead before the 10-minute mark and Baumgartner bookended a string of four goals in the final 2:20 before the break, closing the half with a free-position goal with one second remaining to give the Terriers a 9-2 lead.
The Big Green attempted a comeback in a far more balanced second half, but the Terriers matched every tally and never let Dartmouth within six goals. Goldberg opened the scoring in the second for the Big Green, but Landy and Dalton struck in quick succession to run the score to 11-3.
Meyer converted a free-position shot and sophomore Kat Collins chipped in with a goal at 23:41 for Dartmouth, but Baumgartner and Dalton each sent in feeds from Curro to push the BU lead back to eight. Another pair of goals for the Big Green came from Goldberg and Meyer before Baumgartner set up sophomore Rachel Collins to give BU a 14-7 lead at the midpoint of the second.
Parks netted the final tally for the Big Green with 13:21 to go before Dalton tied the single-season goal-scoring record with her seventh of the game at the 10:17 mark. With the Terriers content to maintain possession and run down the clock, Dartmouth sent junior goalkeeper Julie Wadland out of the cage to try and cause a turnover in the final four minutes, but the Big Green were unable to gain control.
BU held a 26-21 lead in shots as junior Rachel Klein made seven saves for the Terriers, while Wadland stopped three shots in the opposite cage. Dartmouth held a 13-12 edge in ground balls and the Terriers controlled 16 of 27 draws.
The Terriers will attempt to run the table in the America East regular season for the second year in a row on Saturday (April 25), when they host UMBC at 1 p.m. at Nickerson Field in the regular-season finale. BU's three seniors will be honored before the game.
