McKenna, 'Nova Pull Away from LIU
from press release
VILLANOVA, Pa . - Seven goals off the stick of senior Taryn McKenna helped lift Villanova to its fifth consecutive victory here on Tuesday evening, a 19-11 triumph over LIU (3-9). With the win, the Wildcats evened their season mark at 6-6.
The two teams traded goals back and forth for most of the first half. The Blackbirds jumped out to a 5-3 lead with 16:05 left in the first half when Ashley Prizio scored on a free position shot. But the `Cats came right back, when McKenna scored at 14:57 and Taylor Lucy netted another goal just 23 seconds later.
A turning point came with the contest deadlocked at seven. McKenna's goal with 5:07 left in the half put the Wildcats ahead for good and VU followed that with four consecutive scores to end the period. Sophomore Carly Miller scored twice in the final 4:22, McKenna added her sixth of the half and sophomore Rachel Lasda added another to give VU a 12-7 cushion at the break on a frigid night.
Annie Kalata got LIU back to within 12-8 a little more than a minute into the second half but the Wildcats went right back to work as McKenna, Lucy, Erica Rybinski, freshman Trish Shanahan, and Lasda scored five unanswered goals for the Wildcats. The `Cats then cruised home from there for the win.
Villanova owned a 43-24 edge in shots. Sophomore Maggie Langan made six saves in notching the win in goal for the Wildcats.
The `Cats will look to climb over .500 next Tuesday night when they host local rival Temple at 6:00 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
