Ohio State Spooks No. 2 Maryland
from press releases
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Ohio State suffered a narrow 17-16 loss to the No. 2-ranked Maryland Terrapins Sunday in the ALC/ACC women's lacrosse challenge. A season high 836 watched the action at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.
Ohio State jumped out to a 3-0 lead with goals from Jayme Beard, Alayna Markwordt and Gabby Capuzzi. Beard, cutting to the right of the goal, nabbed a clean pass from Kelly Haggerty and sent a quick low shot past Maryland goalie Brittany Dipper just a minute into play. Markwordt added her first of six tallies for the game at 26:28 with a nifty spin move pass the Terrapin defenders and a low shot to the right side.
Capuzzi and sophomore Maghan Beaudrault paired for a Buckeye goal at 25:00, as Capuzzi sprinted toward the Maryland net and capitalized off a crisp pass from Beaudrault.
With 8:15 until halftime, Ohio State regained a one-goal lead as Rachael Cornicello opted out of the free position attempt for a pass to a waiting Markwordt who tallied again with a low shot to put the Buckeyes up, 6-5. The game was tied 9-9 at halftime.
In the second half, Haggerty passed from behind the Maryland net to Beard, who had set up on the right post just outside the crease and beat Mary Jordan top shelf to pull within one with 18 minutes remaining.
Maryland received three yellow cards between 4:15 and 3:08 to give Ohio State the man advantage for the remainder of the game. Haggerty notched a FPS at 3:04 and again at 1:37 to cut the Terrapin lead to one, but that was as close as the Buckeyes could come.
"We wanted to prove that we could play with the No. 2 and No. 4 teams in the country and I think we did that," said OSU coach Sue Stimmel. "It's a hard one to swallow, coming within a goal to finish."
"It was a great challenge. We had four fantastic teams. It was great to see the number of people in Columbus come out and support us. I am proud the way we competed but disappointed we couldn't get a win."
