Denver Outlasts Stony Brook, 22-13

Stony Brook, N.Y. - Karen Morton (8) and Ali Flury combined for 15 goals and Denver broke a 10-10 tie with nine straight goals as the Pioneers defeated the Stony Brook women's lacrosse team, 22-13, at LaValle Stadium on Wednesday afternoon. Senior Kaitlin Leggio (Bay Shore, N.Y.) had four goals and two assists as she tied Carlee Buck's school record for career points with 224. Sophomore Courtney Bertolone (Farmingville, N.Y.) also had four goals for the Seawolves, who are 3-6. Denver is 5-4.
After sophomore Victoria Cable (Oakton, Va.) and senior Amy Hallion (Glenelg, Australia) scored to tie the game at 10, Lauren Ciccomascolo's tally started a 9-0 spurt for Denver, which trailed only twice. Morton and Flury combined to score seven of Denver's nine goals during the spurt. SophomoreMelissa Cook (Bay Shore, N.Y.) scored with 6:58 left in the game on an assist from Leggio to end Stony Brook's drought. The assist from Leggio gave her 224 points for her career to tie Buck.
The first half of the game, which had three ties, saw Stony Brook take just two leads, 1-0 and 2-1. Leggio, who scored three of her four goals in the first half, scored with just a second left in the first half to get the Seawolves within one, 7-6.
Leggio's 24th goal of the season tied the score at seven but Denver reeled off a pair of goals to take a 9-7 lead. Senior Jenna Celano (Farmingdale, N.Y.) scored to make it a one-goal game but Megan Carver, who had three goals and four assists, made it 10-8 with her tally at 24:47. Cable and Hallion's goals came just 17 seconds apart.
With four goals, Leggio has 137 goals and is just 12 shy of breaking Amy Taylor's record of 148 career goals.
