Lacrosse Makes Its Detroit Debut

from press release

The campus of the University of Detroit Mercy is going to be introduced to women's lacrosse on Feb. 28 as the Titans will play in their first-ever home game at Titan Field, with start time slated for 11 a.m. against Niagara. Detroit is the only Division I school in the state of Michigan to sponsor women's lacrosse as a varsity sport.

UDM began its inaugural season this past weekend and ended with a 1-1 record as the Titans won their historic first game by a score of 20-1 at Howard on Feb. 21 and then dropped a 14-6 decision at Navy the following day.

Detroit freshman goalie Brett Yenger (Cincinnati, OH/Sycamore) played every single minute in net for the Titans and collected 21 total saves and garnered a .583 save percentage. Freshman Emily Boissonneault (Brooklin, ON/Donald A. Wilson) led the Titans with eight total goals, five of which came against Howard on Feb. 21, while freshman Anna Eidem (Champlin, MN/Totino Grace) tacked on six against the Bison and one at Navy.

"Our first home game is going to be very special," said UDM head coach Mary Ann Meltzer. "Everything will be new. For our students, faculty and fans, they'll be seeing a new team, a new sport and new home field (Titan Field). I am so excited to be part of the team that brings Division I lacrosse to the City of Detroit and the State of Michigan."

Prior to the contest with the Purple Eagles, the Athletic Department is going to serve a complimentary French toast and sausage breakfast, along with coffee and hot chocolate, beginning at 10:30 a.m. at Titan Field.

The next home contest for the Titans, following the Niagara contest, will be a March 15 match-up against Duquesne (1 p.m.).
