Fifth-ranked Penn Pulls Away
from staff reports
PHILADELPHIA - The No. 5 Penn women's lacrosse
team dominated Drexel in a 10-4 win Saturday at Franklin Field. The
Quakers' season opener featured a new set-up on midfield and
attack, but kept true to the stingy defense they have become
known for in recent years. Junior Ali DeLuca scored three
goals while senior Becca Edwards had a goal an two assists in
her first outing back from injury last season.
Both teams were ready to score from the beginning. Penn waited just
36 seconds to get on the board when Courtney Lubbe connected with
DeLuca. Lubbe had two goals of her own in the game. Drexel returned
fire with a goal just 37 seconds later. Edwards gave Penn the lead
again at 27:21 and Penn went on to score the next six goals to
close out the half with a 9-2 lead.
The break gave the Dragons some energy as they
scored three minutes into the second half and went on to
outscore the Quakers 3-2 in the period. It was not enough though as
Penn came away with its first win of the season.
