COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Maryland's Caitlyn McFadden
scored a game-high seven goals to power No. 6 Maryland past the
UMass women's lacrosse team 16-4 on Saturday. McFadden scored five
of her goals to help the Terps net 12 second half goals after a
close first half that saw UMass trail by just two, 4-2. Four
different Minutewomen scored goals on the day as UMass prepares to
face No. 10 Boston University on Wednesday in Boston.
Both teams traded goals in the first four minutes of play until
Maryland (2-0) used a three-goal run to go up 4-1 with 1:16 left in
the first half. UMass midfielder Merritt Cosgrove scored a free
position goal with 22 seconds left to pull the Minutewomen within
two, 4-2, heading into halftime.
That would be as close as the Minutewomen (0-2) would get,
however, as Maryland scored the first seven goals of the second
half to go up 11-2 with 9:44 left in the game.
Haley Smith stopped the run with a goal with 6:29 to go thanks to
an assist from UMass goalie Katie Florence (six saves) to make the
score 11-3.
McFadden and Karri Ellen Johnson proved too much though as Johnson
added four second half goals to McFadden's five.
The Terps held a decisive 27-to-10 advantage in shots and an
11-to-4 edge in groundballs. After struggling at Holy Cross in the
draw circle in the season opener, UMass trailed Maryland by just
two, 11-to-9. The Minutewomen did committ 15 turnovers, however,
against just six for Maryland.
Senior captain Holly Drown led UMass with a goal and an assist.
