Fairfield Women Favored in MAAC
from press release
In the annual preseason poll of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) Lacrosse League's head coaches, the Fairfield University women's lacrosse team was tabbed as the team to beat. Kristen Coleman (Potomac, Md.) was named the league's Preseason Player of the Year, and was joined on the Preseason All-MAAC team by Kelly Barnes (Jenkintown, Pa.), Lauren Chatnik (Schenectady, N.Y.), Erin Rigby (Fair Haven, N.J.) and Rebecca White (Spring Lake, N.J.).
The Stags received 47 points in the poll of the league's seven head coaches, seven more than second place Marist College (40). Canisius College was selected third, with 37 points, and was followed by Iona College (26), Manhattan College (23), Siena College (15) and Niagara University (8). Fairfield earned six of the seven first-place votes in the poll.
Coleman, a sophomore midfielder, set a school-record with 90 points and 68 goals scored. She was the league's Co-Offensive Player and Rookie of the Year a season ago.
Chatnik is one of the Stags senior captains, and earned Second Team All-MAAC honors last season. She is the program's all-time leader in wins, 29, and is second on the all-time saves list with 464, just seven shy of the program record in that category.
White, also a senior captain, is a mainstay in the Stags midfield. A 2008 Second Team All-MAAC selection, she was fourth on the team with 43 points a season ago. She also had 33 draw controls and 26 caused turnovers.
Barnes, a junior defender, is a two-time MAAC All-Tournament Team selection. Over the course of her two-year career (37 games) she has 31 caused turnovers, 34 draw controls and 12 points, on 11 goals.
Rigby, a junior attack, was second on the team in points a year ago, tallying 62, the third most in a single-season in program history. She touched net 46 times as a sophomore and has 70 career goals.
The Stags posted a 17-2 mark last season, a program-record for wins. Fairfield earned the MAAC regular season crown with a perfect 6-0 mark, before falling in the MAAC Tournament.
Fairfield will open the 2009 season on Feb. 22 with a road game at Monmouth, before opening the home portion of its schedule versus Yale on Feb. 25.
