Vail Shootout: News/Results from Day Six
by Alex Smith | Special to Lacrosse Magazine Online
Day Six of the Vail Lacrosse Shootout was also Day One for the
Men’s and Women’s Elite as the tournament really began
to heat up. Weather was perfect again with sunny weather and
a cool breeze from time to time. Today was “moving
day” for both divisions and we will start to see a little bit
more competitive action tomorrow in the quarterfinals for both
groups.
Men’s Elite
Most of the top seeds moved through on day 1 of the Men’s
Elite tournament. Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear and Team 21, the
#1 and #2 seeds respectively, both took a little time to get moving
against the play-in winners, but both pulled away to move to the
quarterfinals. Team Sasquatch won the first game of the day
in double overtime with a two-point goal in the most exciting game
of an otherwise workmanlike day.
One of the stronger teams looks to be Maverik Elite, which features
Jovan Miller and John Galloway (current Syracuse players), Casey
Powell and Sean Lindsey (old Syracuse players) and great players up
and down the roster. Merrill Lynch/Lacrossewear is likely the
other favorite, but it took them some time to get it going against
Sasquatch.
The East Coast Kings won 16-12 against the Olympic Club and should
give Team 21 a great game tomorrow in the quarterfinals. In
fact, all of the quarterfinal match-ups should be good on Friday as
Merrill Lynch plays a young Chipotle squad, The Med (Thursdays only
upset winner) matches up against Combat Sports/Rocky Mountain
Oysters and Team One’s Jammin’ Salmon play Maverik
Elite all on Ford Field.
