No. 1 Wolverines Pound Eastern Michigan
from press release
YPSILANTI, Mich. – The University of Michigan men's
lacrosse team cruised to a 19-2 win over Eastern Michigan on Sunday
afternoon (March 14) in a cold and drizzly day in Ypsilanti,
Michigan at Rynearson Field. The Wolverines dominated the contest
in all aspects, but it was their smothering ride along with a
career-high five goal effort from senior attackman Clark McIntyre
(Little Silver, N.J./Rumson – Fair Haven) that was the
difference in the end.
Senior midfielder Svet Tintchev (Rockville, Md./Bullis) got
Michigan on the board 2:31 in on a dodge and fire from the left
wing. Senior attackman Zorovich's (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa)
followed on a dodge from the right GLE to make it 2-0 at the 10:32
mark. Junior long-stick midfielder Matt Asperheim (Grand Rapids,
Mich./East Grand Rapids) scooped up a groundball and fed junior
attackman Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Penn./Upper St. Claire) for the
3-0 lead more than five minutes later.
Sophomore midfielder Alex Vasileff (Birmingham, Mich./Seaholm)
added his second career goal and second tally in as many games to
increase the Wolverine lead to four at 2:53, followed by McIntyre's
first to close out the first-quarter scoring.
Senior midfielder Jordan Kirshner (Ann Arbor, Mich./Huron) opened
the second-quarter with a man-down tally, followed by Yealy's
second of the game at 10:23. Asperheim was on the receiving end of
the next Maize and Blue goal, streaking down the middle on the
transition and burying a feed from Zorovich for his second point of
the game. Senior defensive midfielder and captain Michael
Bartomioli (Pleasantville, N.Y./Pleasantville – Providence)
got in on the action four minutes later on and end-to-end run,
followed by goals from McIntyre and Yealy to wrap up the first half
with Michigan leading 11-0 after 30 minutes.
McIntyre added his third goal of the game to open the second half
just 36 seconds in on Michigan's first possession before EMU
finally got on the board with back-to-back goals at 11:05 and
10:51. Leading 12-2 midway through the third, freshman midfielder
Willie Steenland (Minneapolis, Minn./The Blake School) scored his
second career goal in as many games on a dodge down the left wing.
McIntyre scored his fourth under a minute later, but neither team
succeeded in finding the back of the net in the final 8:36 of the
third.
The Wolverines banged home five more goals in the fourth, including
tallies from senior attackman Josh Ein (Potomac, MD./Bullis),
freshman attackman Thomas Paras (Lakewood, Ohio/St. Ignatius),
McIntyre, Kirshner and Yealy. With the 19-2 win, Michigan opened
their CCLA schedule 1-0.
Statistically, Michigan dominated every category. U-M outshot the
Eagles 61-12, and scooped up 76 groundballs compared to 32 by EMU.
U-M was 17 of 25 on faceoffs, and cleared the ball at an impressive
rate, finishing 16 of 18 on clears. Michigan held Eastern Michigan
to just 8-25 totals with a strong ride, including allowing only two
clears on nine attempts in the first quarter. The Maize and Blue
scored twice on three man-up attempts with EMU scoring once on two
attempts.
The Wolverines are right back on the road again this upcoming
weekend, taking on #8 Oregon in Dallas, Texas as part of the 2010
Patriot Cup on March 20 at 7:00pm CST. For all of your Michigan

QUOTES
Head Coach John Paul
On his general impressions: "I was pretty happy with the
way we played today. We wanted to use this as an opportunity to
play a lot of the younger guys and gauge where we were and to work
on some of the fundamental things that we have to continue to get
better on during the season. I'm really happy with the way we rode
and we did a lot of the little things we need to do well,
especially under some tough conditions."
On the defense: "The guys were up enough. Obviously it's going to
be tough to get the guys sky-high for this game in those
conditions. Our focus today was to do the little things right and
play solid defense and our starters didn't give up a shot in the
first half, so I think we're going in the right direction. It was
certainly a point today that we wanted to really limit their
opportunities and I think we did that."
On McIntyre: "Clark just knows how to stay within himself. He can
dodge, no question, but his strength is flashing to the ball and
finishing. Any time the defense gets a little flat-footed or they
start ball watching, he's flashing to the ball and the guys are
starting to learn to look for him inside. He got a few more he
didn't capitalize on, but he's creating opportunities, and that's
important."
On the play of the younger players: "I think Joseph Hrusovsky is
really starting to come along, and I like the way he's playing with
confidence and creating with the ball in his stick. He might not
see a lot of time versus some of the better teams, but I think
Brian O'Callaghan is doing a nice job when he gets in. We have
different expectations for different guys and some guys we know
that they might take a little time to develop, but we want to see
everyone playing with confidence."
On the upcoming week: "This is a big stretch for us over the next
couple of weeks and it fits our theme of playing tough teams in the
early part of the season. We're going down to Texas to participate
in a great event and we are playing a very good, undefeated Oregon
team. That will be a challenge for us, but we've been tested plenty
so far this season. The guys get up for big games and this will be
a big game. It's also special because the event is helping us get
there and it will be the first time this year that the entire team
is on the road as one. It will be a special weekend."
