Michigan Beats Wittenberg in Scrimmage

from press releases

ANN ARBOR
, Mich. - The University of Michigan Men's Lacrosse team earned their second pre-season scrimmage win of 2010, defeating Division-III Wittenberg by a score of 10-5 on Saturday night in Ann Arbor, Michigan at Oosterbaan Fieldhouse.  The Wolverines jumped out quickly, opening up a 4-1 lead after just 15 minutes and were able to roll through their entire depth-chart as each and every healthy player saw action in the unofficial match.

Junior attackman Trevor Yealy (Pittsburgh, Penn./Upper St. Claire) paced Michigan once again with five goals, inclunding two in the opening quarter.  Senior attackman Josh Ein (Potomac, MD./Bullis) had another strong outing, adding three goals, while senior captain David Rogers (Wayne, N.J./Wayne Hills) rounded out the U-M scoring with two of his own.

Michigan extended their lead to 6-1 five minutes into the second quarter, but the Tigers responded with two of their own to close within three.  U-M regained the momentum with the final goal of the first half, and out-scored Wittenberg 2-0 in the third to take a 9-3 lead into the final frame.

The Tigers clawed back in the fourth quarter, scoring two goals in the first eight minutes of the period, including one on the man-up.  However, it was too little, too late as the Wolverines held on in the final minutes of the game to secure the unofficial win.

All four Michigan goaltenders saw action with juniors Mark Stone (Greenwood Village, Colo./Cherry Creek) and Andrew Fowler (Grosse Pointe, Mich./Hotchkiss, CT) playing the first and second quarter's respectively, while freshmen Conor McGee (Baltimore, MD/Gilman School) and Cy Abdelnour (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer) played the third and fourth quarters.  None of the four netminders let in more than two goals in a period, with Fowler leading the way with six saves during his 15 minutes of play.

Michigan will be back in action next Friday night when they host Ohio Wesleyan and Trine in a night of scrimmages between the three squads.  Michigan and OWU will kick off the evening at 7:00pm.
