Santangelo Catapults Union into Quarterfinals

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - The seniors went out in style.
Rob Santangelo recorded six points (four goals, two assists) and Charlie Ross tallied a hat trick to lead ninth-ranked Union to a 17-11 win over 12th-ranked Amherst in the Second Round of the NCAA Division III Championship at Frank Bailey Field. Union's 13-member senior class, making its final home appearance, helped the Garnet and White finish undefeated at home (9-0) this season.
The Dutchmen (15-4) will face top-ranked RIT, a 20-8 winner over Ithaca, in the NCAA Quarterfinals Wednesday (May 14) in Rochester. Union is 0-2 against RIT, with both losses occurring by a combined three goals.
On Saturday, Union's defense held Amherst to five second half goals, allowing just one marker in the fourth quarter. The game was tied at 9-9 in the third quarter when Jon Andrews scored twice, and Santangelo went on a three-goal spurt, capping an 8-2 Union run to finish the game.
Amherst (15-5) came out firing, scoring twice in the opening four minutes to stake a 2-0 lead. Union claimed its first lead of the day, 3-2, on Richard Gregory's 20th goal of the year with four minutes left in the first. The game was tied three more times before the Dutchmen pulled away late in the third quarter.
Gregory (two goals, two assists), Andrews (two goals, assist), Nolan Stauffer (goal, two assists), Peter Richardson (two goals), Adam Sands (goal, assist), and Cameron Slatton (two assists) joined Santangelo and Ross as multiple-point performers.
Goalkeeper Stefan Basile (13-3) made 15 stops while counterpart Greg Majno was equally up to the task, recording 14 saves. The "U" finished with a 51-48 edge in total shots while winning the ground balls battle, 36-27.
Quinn Moroney led the Jeffs offensively with six points (four goals, two assists) to finish with 32 goals and 112 points on the season.
