Lynchburg Proves Too Much For Nazareth

from press release

STEVENSON, Md. – The Lynchburg College men's lacrosse team won its second game in the Mid-Season Classic, hosted by Stevenson University on Saturday 13-10 over Nazareth College in a non-conference thriller.

The Hornets struck with an unassisted goal at 9:04 in the first quarter from Aaron Murphy, his 17th goal of the year. Nazareth retaliated with a slew of goals in quick succession from Luke Longo, Drew Simoneau and Troy Haefele, and took a 3-1 lead at 7:09. The Golden Flyers maintained their two-score lead until LC closed the gap to one when Campbell Armstrong fired in a goal at 3:18. Two minutes later, Murphy found the back of the net again after he collected a pass from Cullan Ganley to even the score at 3-3.

Nazareth came out quickly in the second quarter, when Collin Clark scored a goal at 13:07 and took a 4-3 lead, but the Golden Flyers would not hold it for long. LC answered back when Armstrong scored a goal off of transition at 9:27. Armstrong's score sparked three more goals in a row for the Hornets, coming from Murphy who collected an early hat trick, Todd Galvin and Austin Stewart to give the Hornets a 7-4 lead. David Alyanakian, Luke Ernst and Galvin each recorded assists on the goals. Nazareth was able to score one more in the first half when Brian Wright fired one in, but Alyanakian increased the Hornets' lead to 8-5 with just 52 seconds left in the first half after he notched a goal off an assist from Galvin.

Lynchburg increased the lead to 9-5 as Jacob Fuller found the back of the net. Nazareth went on the attack with a man-up opportunity but Fawkes made an impressive save off a Haefele shot. Despite Fawkes' tough play in goal, the Golden Flyers came knocking on the door and scored three unanswered goals, turning LC's once comfortable lead into just a 9-8 advantage for the Hornets.

The Hornets opened the fourth quarter with a man-up advantage and almost connected with a goal after Charlie Oldendorp fired a shot that was saved by Scott Brown. Less than a minute later, at 13:48, Nazareth evened the score at 9-9 when Wooters put one past Fawkes to score his first goal of the game, but LC answered back at 12:31 when Oldendorp scored a goal with the assist from Galvin to take a 10-9 lead. At 8:02, Armstrong blasted one into the cage to garner the hat trick and furthering LC's lead to 11-9. Less than two minutes later, Nazareth responded with a goal from Wright assisted by Wooters to put the score at 11-10. LC would not let Nazareth go on another run, clamping on the defense in the final seven minutes of action and Stewart scored two insurance goals to collect the hat trick and mark the final score at 13-10.

Armstrong, Steward and Murphy each recorded hat tricks, and Galvin led the Hornets in assists with three. Jon Gill led the team with five ground balls, while Bobby Distler and Eric Lombardo each recorded four.

Fawkes played a spectacular 60 minutes in goal for the Hornets, saving a career-high 19 balls and picking up his fourth win on the season. Brown recorded four saves in goal for the Golden Flyers (2-5).

The Hornets (6-2/1-0 ODAC) will look to continue their win streak Saturday when they take on #5 Stevenson University at home at 4 p.m. in non-conference action.
