Cortland Pastes Potsdam, SUNYAC Title Game Awaits

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Freshman Zach Hopps (Akwesasne/Massena) matched his career high with six points on a career-best four goals and two assists to lead the nationally top-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team to a 16-5 win versus Potsdam in a SUNYAC Semifinal game Wednesday afternoon at the Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons, who improved to 16-0 with the win, host second-seeded Plattsburgh, a 15-7 winner versus Brockport in the second semifinal, in the SUNYAC Final on Saturday at noon. The Bears' season ended at 6-8.
Junior Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) contributed two goals and one assist, junior Mike Cummings (Syracuse/East Syracuse Minoa) and sophomore Benjamin Dunlavey (Elmira/Corning East) each scored twice and junior Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) recorded one goal and two assists. Senior Thomas Casey (Yorktown) chipped in with one goal and one assist, and sophomores Matt Rakoczy (Clifton Park/Albany Academy), Hunter Osborne (Homer) and Eric Ohman (Islip) and freshman James Stavrakis (Hillsborough, NJ) netted one goal apiece.
Senior Mike Kaminski (Sayville) played the first 34 minutes, 30 seconds in goal for the Red Dragons, making four saves and allowing two goals. Junior Steve Mahle (Camillus/West Genesee) stopped four shots and surrendered three goals in 23:26, and senior Brendan Quinn (Shrewsbury, NJ/Red Bank Regional) did not face a shot on goal over the final 2:04. Freshman Pat Baldwin (Alpharetta, GA) won 10 of 14 faceoffs. He collected four ground balls along with sophomore Patrick Brown (Camillus/West Genesee).
Senior Derek Frost (Buffalo/Williamsville East) led Potsdam with two goals and one assist. Freshman Pat Bonafede (Churchville/Churchville-Chili) scored twice, senior Pat Morrill (Webster/Webster Thomas) tallied a goal and juniors Jared Flath (Dexter/General Brown) and Rob Kunz (Watertown/Immaculate Heart) each contributed an assist.
Senior Stefan Sloma (Niskayuna) started in the cage for the Bears, registering four saves and allowing 10 goals in 25:50. Junior Ryan Duffy (Liverpool) made six saves and surrendered five goals in 26:06. Senior Ryan Doyle (Baldwinsville/C.W. Baker) gave up one goal in 5:04 before freshman Jack Corcoran (Rochester/Churchville-Chili) played the final three minutes, stopping one shot. Junior Matt Donovan (Oswego) led Potsdam with four ground balls.
Cortland led just 3-2 after the opening quarter. The Bears took a 2-1 lead as Bonafede scored at 12:19 and Morrill netted a man-up goal at 6:07 after Casey tied the score for the Red Dragons. The advantage was short-lived as Rakoczy tallied a goal one minute after Morrill's score and Stavrakis put Cortland in front for good with his goal at 4:09. The Red Dragons took control of the game by out scoring Potsdam, 8-0, in the second quarter for a commanding 11-2 lead at the half.
The Red Dragons scored all three goals of the third quarter to run their goal-scoring streak to 13 and led 14-2 through three quarters. Hopps, Cummings and Ohman each netted a goal in the quarter. Each team went deep into its bench in the fourth quarter with the Bears out scoring Cortland, 3-2. Frost tallied a pair of man-up goals and Bonafede scored his second of the game. Osborne and Cummings each scored for Cortland.
