Bogert Helps Montclair Win Fifth Straight Skyline Title

MONTCLAIR, N.J. - Senior Kenneth Bogert (Brick, NJ, Brick Township), scored six times while junior goalkeeper Michael Dorn (Blairstown, NJ, North Warren) made 10 saves as top-seeded Montclair State captured its fifth consecutive Skyline Conference championship with a 16-7 victory over No. 2 seeded Kean University at Sprague Field on Saturday.

Senior attack Jack Skeels (Roseland, NJ, West Essex) added three goals and two assists as the Red Hawks (14-4) also clinched an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Championship. It will be the fifth straight berth in the NCAAs for MSU, which will be among the names called when the NCAA Selection Show is presented on Sunday, May 5 on NCAA.com.

Senior midfielder Tom Clifford (West Islip, NY / West Islip) had a goal and three assists for Kean, which fell to 15-3 on the season, two of those losses coming against the Red Hawks. The Cougars fell to MSU 10-6 on April 17 in Montclair.

Meeting in the finals for fifth time in six years, the Red Hawks and Cougars traded goals over the first 10 minutes of the first quarter as Bogert connected twice for Montclair with Richard Cheiftiz (Fair Lawn, NJ / Fair Lawn) and Brad Mills (Vernon, NJ / Vernon) scoring for the Cougars. MSU would push three more across before the end of the first stanza as Bogert, Michael Jevic (Voorhees, NJ, Eastern Regional), andZach Schreck (Flemington, NJ, Hunterdon Central) each scored, the latter coming with a man-up. Clifford would answered back for the Cougars with 20 seconds left as Montclair held a 5-3 lead going into the second period.

Mills scored 47 seconds into the second period bringing Kean within a goal, however Montclair scored seven of the last eight goals of the period, including six consecutive scores. Freshman Zach Schreck opened the run with an incredible behind-the-back goal, with Bogert, Joel Van Der Wal (Columbia, NJ, North Warren)and Sam Morrissey (Hackettstown, NJ, West Morris Central) each collecting one before a pair of Skeels goals gave the Red Hawks a 11-4 lead with 5:15 remaining. Sean Bobal (Clinton, NJ / North Hunterdon) snapped the run with a goal however Bogert scored with eight seconds to play giving MSU a 12-5 lead at the break.

Kean got the first goal of the third as John Marcelli (Moorestown, NJ / Moorestown) scored with 8:21 left but Bogert immediately answered with his sixth goal 27 seconds later starting a three-goal run by the Red Hawks, who led 15-6 after three periods.

Jevic finished with two goals for Montclair State while Schreck added two goals and an assist. Bogert was 10-of-17 on faceoffs with seven ground balls while senior Sean Gilmore (Elmwood Park, NJ, Bergen Catholic) registered five ground balls and three caused turnovers. Senior defender Mike Lade (Randolph, NJ, Randolph) forced a pair of turnovers and added five grounds balls with Steve Danyluk (Raritan, NJ, Bridgewater-Raritan) also getting five ground balls.

Marcelli and Mills had two goals apiece for Kean with Cheifitz getting a goal and two assists. Freshman Ed Adams (Montclair, NJ / Montclair) was 6-of-9 on faceoffs with seven ground balls. Junior goalkeeper Dino Vitale (Ambler, PA / Hatboro-Horsham) made 16 saves with Lane Zierten (Washington Township, NJ / Washington Township) making one in his 15 minutes of action.

The Skyline Conference championship continues a run of dominance in the league by Montclair State. Since falling to Kean in the 2008 tournament title game, the Red Hawks have gone an amazing 28-1 the last five years winning the conference crown each season.
