Watkins Big in Goal as Tufts Upsets Stevenson
from press release
OWINGS MILLS, Md. - Junior goalie Patton
Watkins (Chattanooga, TN) made 16 saves and Tufts used goals 21
seconds apart by junior Peter Bowers (Berwyn, PA) and sophomore
Chris Schoenhut (Mill Neck, NY) late in the fourth quarter to earn
a hard-fought 7-6 victory at #2 Stevenson on Tuesday night.
With the win, #9 Tufts will return home from its spring break trip south with a pair of victories against national top five teams. They won 18-14 at #4 Stevens Tech on Saturday. The Jumbos are now 2-2.
The loss was the first of the season for the Mustangs (6-1), whose six goals were their fewest this season. Tufts senior defenseman John Heard (Greenwich, CT) collected eight groundballs and caused two turnovers. Senior Brian Ruggiero (Huntington, NY) was excellent on face-offs at 11 for 17.
With the game tied at 5-5 and five minutes left in the fourth quarter, Bowers scored on a shot from the top of the circle to make it 6-5. Ruggiero then won the face-off and at 4:39 Schoenhut scored for a 7-5 Jumbo lead.
Stevenson would pull within one at 7-6 on Peter Green's ninth goal of the season with 1:31 remaining in regulation. Ruggiero won the ensuing face-off and Tufts called time-out with 56 seconds remaining. The Jumbos turned the ball over and Stevenson cleared it for one last chance at tying the score. However, they turned it over as well with Jumbo sophomore Tim LaBeau (Mountain Lakes, NJ) picking up the ground ball to seal the win for Tufts.
The teams had battled to a 4-4 tie at halftime. Stevenson led 2-1 at the end of the first period after Nick Rossi set up two goals. After back-to-back goals by both teams, Tufts junior Dan Leventhal (Chappaqua, NY) scored his third of the season with 6:57 to go until halftime to knot it at 4-4. Watkins had nine first-half saves as Stevenson earned a 23-19 edge in shots.
Following a scoreless third quarter, Jumbo senior Andrew Fiamengo (New Fairfield, CT) scored his second goal of the game at 7:42 of the fourth for a 5-4 lead. Mustang Mark Pannenton netted his 17th of the year at 6:12 to tie the game at 5-5, leading to Tufts taking the win in the final five minutes.
Junior Beau Wood (Sherwood Forest, MD) joined Fiamengo in leading Tufts with two goals each.
Pannenton's two goals lead Stevenson, while Rossi had three assists. Demitri Pecunes made 12 saves in the Mustang goal. Warren Pumphrey caused three turnovers for the hosts, while Parker Bratton scooped up four groundballs.
