Colby Player Dies During Semester Abroad
from press release
WATERVILLE, Maine - The Colby College community mourns the loss of junior Derrik Flahive (Littleton, Colo.), who died Tuesday in a drowning accident in Chile, where he was studying abroad. Flahive, a global studies major with a minor in philosophy, was a member of the varsity lacrosse team.
"We lost a very dynamic young man in Derrik Flahive," said men's lacrosse head coach Justin Domingos. "His ability to play lacrosse at a high level was overshadowed by his ability to connect with people from all walks of life," Domingos said. "His passion for living has touched every member of this program who came in contact with Derrik. While the team is overcome with grief, we look now to remember the good times we shared with Derrik and try to provide some comfort to his parents and sisters."
There will be a community gathering of remembrance for Derrik on Thursday, November 17, at 12:30 p.m. in the chapel at Colby. The gathering will be an opportunity for the community to come together in this time of collective grief. Counselors and chaplains will be present and there will be an opportunity for open sharing for anyone who wishes to speak.
A more formal campus memorial service is being planned for after Thanksgiving.
Flahive often gave of himself to help others. He spent time in Tanzania and Zimbabwe building schools, wells, stoves, and other items for people in need. He was a mentor in the Colby Cares About Kids program and took part in many men's lacrosse team fundraising and volunteer activities.
On the field Flahive had a blazing shot. He finished fifth on the team in scoring last year with 10 goals and six assists for 16 points, and he had 14 groundballs. In his first year he had 13 goals and dished five assists to go with eight groundballs. He was part of a strong recruiting class that helped the Mules to three straight NESCAC playoff appearances.
Flahive was part of the Colby Student Investment Association and was a mentor and teacher for drums.
He played lacrosse and football at Kent Denver, where he was a 2009 graduate. He was an all-state selection in lacrosse.
Colby President William Adams informed the community of Flahive's death the evening of Nov. 15 with this official notice:
I am deeply saddened to inform the Colby community that Derrik Flahive '13 died today (Tuesday) in a drowning accident in Chile. Derrik, a global studies major and philosophy minor from Littleton, Colorado, was enrolled in the SIT Chile: Socioeconomic and Political Transformation program, based in Santiago.
There are few details available now, but we will share information about memorial services and other opportunities to remember and honor Derrik as those plans develop. Colby's first gesture to honor Derrik will be to lower the flags on campus tomorrow, in his memory.
I know that all of us send our profound sympathies to Derrik's family and to his friends -- here at Colby and beyond -- in their time of unimaginable grief.
William D. Adams
