Young Guns Lead RIT Past Western New England

ROCHESTER, N.Y. - Freshman Kyle Aquin (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Jean De Brebeuf) scored four goals, and sophomore Taylor Wisman (Seattle, WA/Inglemoor) dished out four assists to lift the No. 7 RIT (17-2) men'a lacrosse team to a 15-9 win over Western New England University (13-5) in the Second Round of the 2012 NCAA Division III Men's Lacrosse Tournament on Saturday. It is the third straight year the TIgers have advanced to the quarterfinals, and eleventh trip overall. RIT will face Tufts Univesity in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 16.
Aquin led the Tigers with four goals. The freshman midfielder has 10 points on nine goals and an assist in four postseason games this year. Wisman led RIT with five points on a goal and four assists. Seniors A.J. Tingle (Cary, NC/Green Hope) and Tyler Russell (Livonia, NY/Livonia) each had three points on two goals and an assist. Brendan MacDonald (Georgetown, Ontario/Trinity-Pawling) had a goal and two assists, while Jordan Collins-Hartwig (Buffalo, NY/Clarence) scored two goals. Alex Crepinsek (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas) and Jack Krzyston (Bedford, NH/Bishop Guertin) each scored a goal, and sophomore Anthony DeLeo (Canandaigua, NY/Canandaigua Academy) picked up his 15th win of the season making 11 saves.
Sean Lawton led Western New England with three goals on the afternoon. James Reardon had a goal and two assists, while Patrick White and Adam Knapton each had a goal and an assist. Brewster Knowlton took the loss for Western New England allowing 15 goals and making 14 saves.
Western New England held a 37-34 shot advantage, and held a 38-37 ground ball edge. The Tigers won 15-of-28 faceoffs, led by Tyler Shaw (Tully, NY/Tully) had went 7-of-8 all in the second half. RIT went 1-for-2 with the man advantage, while the Golden Bears were 0-for-1 on man-up. RIT committed 15 turnovers to 21 for Western New England.
RIT opened the scoring with two straight goals from Crepinsek and Aquin to give the Tigers an early 2-0 lead.
Sean Lawton and James Reardon scored back-to-back goals for Western New England to tie the score at 2-2 with 4:30 to play in the opening quarter.
MacDonald and Russell scored consecutive goals late in the first quarter, giving RIT a 4-2 lead.
Patrick White scored off an assist from Reardon with :26 seconds to play in the quarter, making it a 4-3 Tigers lead after one quarter of play.
Corbett Corrigan Harreys and Knapton opened the scoring for Western New England in the second quarter, giving the Golden Bears their first lead at 5-4.
The Tigers answered right back with three straight goals from Tingle, Aquin and Krzyston, increasing the Tigers lead back to two goals at 7-5 with 4:10 to play in the first half.
Collins-Hartwig sandwiched a goal between Western New England goals late in the half, making it 8-7 RIT at the break.
RIT opened it up in the second half, outscoring Western New England, 7-2. DeLeo made six of his 11 saves in the second half, including six in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers broke the game open with two straight goals to end the third quarter and three straight to open the fourth quarter, extending their lead to seven goals on Tingles 25th tally of the year.
Aquin scored two of his four goals in the second half, while Wisman dished out two of his four assists in the second half, and scored a goal. Tom Riley (West Nyack, NY/Clarkstown South), Russell, Tingle and Collins-Hartwig each had goals in the second half for RIT.
RIT is making its 14th appearance in the NCAA Tournament, and have lost just three games in two seasons, and are 50-9 since the 2010 season.
RIT will face Tufts in the quarterfinals on Wednesday, May 16 at a time and location to be determined. The Tigers lost to Tufts 16-12 in last year's semifinals at RIT's Turf Field.
