No. 2 Cortland Blanks Nazareth in Second Half to Win

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally
second-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team held Nazareth scoreless
over the final 38 minutes, 15 seconds of the game to earn a 9-2
non-conference victory Tuesday night under the lights at the SUNY
Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red Dragons improved to 13-0 on the
season, while the Golden Flyers fell to 6-7.
Six different players scored goals for Cortland led by sophomore Joe Slavik(Binghamton/Seton Catholic), who found the back of the net three times. Senior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) had two goals and one assist, and senior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) and sophomore Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) recorded one goal and one assist apiece. Sophomore Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) and freshman Mike Cantelli (Holmdel, NJ) each scored a goal and senior Zack Mulvaney(Deferiet/Carthage) chipped in with three assists.
Junior goalie Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made three saves as he faced only 13 Nazareth shots in the game, seven in the fourth quarter. Junior Nick Jarvis(Syracuse/Onondage Central) won 9-of-15 faceoffs and collected six ground balls, while Consul and Wright each scooped up four ground balls.
Senior John McDonnell (Fairport) and sophomore Mark Pinski (Buffalo/St. Joseph's) tallied Nazareth's goals with senior Nate Delone (West Henrietta/Rush-Henrietta) picking up an assist. Junior goalie Tim Doyle (Macedon/Palmyra-Macedon) registered 15 saves. Pinski added four ground balls and freshman Vinny Parrillo (Mahopac) recorded six ground balls.
The pace of the game was deliberate from the start with the Golden Flyers eventually getting the first goal off Pinski's stick at 7:14 of the first quarter. Slavik answered at 6:17 and Cantelli gave Cortland the lead for good at 4:30. After Slavik made it a 3-1 game 45 seconds into the second quarter, McDonnell netted Nazareth's final goal of the game at the 6:45 mark to pull the Golden Flyers to within 3-2. From that point, the Cortland defense dominated.
Wright scored at 4:58 of the second and Tota gave Cortland a 5-2 lead at the half with a man-up goal 1:13 before intermission. The Red Dragons ran off four goals in the third quarter from four different players and held Nazareth to two shots for a 9-2 advantage heading into the final 15 minutes. Neither team scored in the fourth quarter with each squad getting off seven shots.
