Consul Leads No. 3 Cortland Past Gettysburg

MASSAPEQUA, N.Y.
– Seven different players scored goals as the nationally third-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team improved its record to 3-0 on the season with an 11-4 win against Gettysburg Saturday afternoon in the fourth annual North-South Oyster Bay Challenge at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. The Bullets fell to 2-2 with the setback.

Sophomore Cody Consul (Webster/Webster Schroeder) recorded a career-high four points on two goals and two assists to lead Cortland. Freshman Nick Wolak (Rochester/Brighton) had two goals and an assist, and senior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) and sophomore Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) netted two goals apiece.

Senior Zack Mulvaney (Deferiet/Carthage) added a goal and an assist, senior Brendan Bellew (Baldwin) and sophomore defender Brian Winterfeldt (Merrick/Calhoun) each scored a goal and senior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) and junior Taylor Mendoza (Greensboro, NC/Western Guilford) chipped in with an assist. Junior Mike Kaminski (Sayville) made nine saves in 58 minutes, 20 seconds before giving way to sophomore Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder), who stopped one shot in the final 1:40.

Martin Manilla tallied a game-high three goals for the Bullets. Bijan Firouzan scored once, Henry Tesar registered two assists and Ryan Fumai added one assist. Nick Avedisian won 11-of-19 faceoffs, and goalie J.T. McCook recorded 12 saves.

The Red Dragons took control of the game early, building a 3-0 lead before the midway point of the first quarter. Consul assisted on goals by Mulvaney at 12:42 and Slavik at 11:05 before Wolak scored the first of his career at 7:49. Wolak pushed Cortland's lead to 4-0 at the 2:54 mark. Firouzan made it a 4-1 game with an unassisted goal at 1:52. Slavik and Bellew scored 25 seconds apart to open the scoring early in the second quarter, but Manilla tallied his first of the game to pull the Bullets within 6-2. The Red Dragons took momentum into intermission when Mulvaney assisted on Tota's goal just 10 seconds before the half.

The teams traded goals in the third quarter with Manilla scoring at 9:04 and Tota netting his second of the game at 3:43, and the Red Dragons took an 8-3 advantage into the final 15 minutes of play. Consul went to work for Cortland, scoring a man-down goal at 12:40 then finishing off a pass from Wright at 8:48 to give the Red Dragons a commanding 10-3 lead. Manilla and Winterfeldt traded goals 24 seconds apart with less than three minutes remaining to conclude the scoring.
