Cannon, No. 13 Blast Montclair State

from press release

CARLISLE, Pa.
– The #13-ranked Dickinson College men's lacrosse team used a strong second half to post a 15-8 win over visiting Montclair State University on Saturday afternoon.

The teams traded goals early as Montclair struck first and sandwiched a pair of goals around a tally from sophomore Brian Cannon (Reisterstown, Md./Loyola Blakefield) to hold a 2-1 lead, midway through the first quarter.

The Devils scored three straight to close out the first quarter with a 4-2 advantage. Senior Bobby Kingsley (Bethesda, Md./St. Alban's) finished an assist from classmate Ward Gruppo (Fairfield, Conn./Fairfield Prep) before Cannon tallied back-to-back assists to Sam Greenberg (Owings Mills, Md./McDonogh) and Will Scott (Emmaus, Pa./Emmaus).

Cannon found the net for the second time to add another Devil score at the 12:47 mark of the second quarter. He finished a great pass from long-stick middie Brandon Palladino (Basking Ridge, N.J./Basking Ridge) with the Devils playing man-down at the time.

The Red Hawks came to life, answering with three straight goals to pull even at 5-5, with 8:16 remaining in the first half. Kingsley scored on a fast break, taking a pass from junior Matt Cherry (Bryn Mawr, Pa./Radnor) to give Dickinson a 6-5 lead at the break.

Penalties plagued the third quarter as each team capitalized on an extra-man opportunity in the early minutes of the second half. Cherry netted a man-up goal with 13:04 on the clock. The Red Hawks answered with an extra-man goal from Michael Schreck at 12:46 before the Devils returned the favor on another EMO as Cherry fed Cannon for a hat-trick and an 8-6 Red Devil lead.

Dickinson gave itself some breathing room with a pair of quick scores, just 22 seconds apart. Senior Sam Abramson (Alexandria, Va./Potomac) scored at the 10:32 mark and Greenberg finished an assist from first-year Ace Suduh (Franklin Park, N.J./St. Joseph's) with 10:10 remaining in the period.

Matt Prongay broke up the Devil run, scoring at the 4:59 mark to pull Montclair with three at 10-7. Cannon connected with Gruppo for back-to-back goals at the end of the third and to start the fourth, stretching the margin to 12-7 with 14:41 remaining in the game.

Montclair would take advantage of another extra-man opportunity, scoring its final goal of the game at the 11:21 mark. The defense closed the door from that point as the Devils would score three more times for the final of 15-8.

Cannon recorded assists to Kingsley and Greenberg, and Gruppo tallied another man-down goal for the Devils as they improve to 3-1 on the season.

Cannon finished with three goals and six assists on the day. His six assists mark the third-best single-game total in school history while his nine-point effort was just shy of the program's single-game top-10.

Three more Red Devils recorded hat-tricks with Kingsley, Greenberg and Gruppo all finding the net three times on Saturday. Cherry finished with a goal and two assists. Palladino was force in the midfield, adding a game-high 10 ground balls and three caused turnovers.

Senior Chip Murray (New Canaan, Conn./New Canaan) won 13 face-offs and controlled five GBs while Carter Moore (Virginia Beach, Va./Norfolk Academy) won 2-of-3. Sophomore Max Pawk (Sewickley, Pa./Sewickley) earned the win in goal for the Devils, stopping five shots and controlling three GBs. Sophomore Draper Donley (Lutherville, Md./St. Paul's) caused five turnovers and controlled five ground balls as well.

Six different players scored for Montclair (0-3) with Kenneth Bogert leading the way with a pair. He added 10 face-off wins and picked-up five ground balls.

The Red Devils improve to 3-1 on the season. They travel south to face #10-ranked Roanoke University on March 11th at 2:00 pm.
