from press release
LEXINGTON, Va. - The 15th-ranked Denison men's lacrosse team scored 11 goals in the middle quarters en route to a 15-9 victory over Washington & Lee on Sunday afternoon.
The Big Red scored the game's opening goal when a failed clear attempt by W&L resulted in a goal by senior Cory Couture off an assist from sophomore Eddie Vita. Roughly three and a half minutes later, the Generals tied the contest when Garrett Paglia rifled a shot from 20 yards out off an assist from Cameron Dabir.
The score remained tied until Couture uncorked a shot from 18 yards out with 10 seconds remaining in the first quarter. The momentum from the senior's second tally carried into the second period as Denison erupted for six unanswered goals in the opening 6+ minutes of the stanza.
Zach Walsh got the scoring run started when he took an Alex Hardt pass and found the back of the net from roughly 20 yards out. In a 30 second span, Vita and Hardt both scored to give Denison a 5-1 lead. Couture assisted on Vita's man-up goal, while Davis Lukens had the helper on Hardt's score.
Vita notched his second tally of the afternoon after burying a fall-away shot from seven-yards out with 9:33 left in the half. An unassisted tally by Hardt and an Austin Campbell goal off a pass from Couture gave DU an 8-1 lead with 8:17 on the clock. Paglia broke up the Big Red spurt with a goal at 1:59. However, Vita completed the hat trick after taking a no-look pass from Lukens and unloading a shot from point blank range as Denison entered the break with a 9-2 lead.
DU opened the second-half scoring when Vita found Hardt at 6:56. Roughly a minute and a half later, the Big Red went up 11-2 when Walsh scored his second goal of the day off an assist from Will Koontz. On the Walsh goal, the Generals' Andrew Fusselbaugh was called for slashing, giving Denison an extra-man opportunity. With four seconds left in the man advantage, Chapin Speidel ripped a shot past goalie Patrick Jennings.
Speidel added another point to his stat sheet when he assisted on Walsh's third goal of the afternoon. Walsh's hat-trick tally at 3:33 gave the Big Red an 11-goal lead as the two squads entered the final quarter. In the fourth, Speidel recorded a second helper when he found Hardt for his fourth goal of the game at 13:58.
Washington & Lee finally ended its scoring drought with 13:03 left in the game when Mac Means scored an unassisted man-up goal after Denison was flagged for unnecessary roughness. DU regained its 12-goal lead when Walsh scored a man-up goal off an assist from Mike Soumekh. The Generals rattled off six-consecutive goals over the final 10:53, but it was too little too late for W&L as the Big Red improved to 2-0 on the year.
Hardt (4g, 1a), Vita (3g, 2a) and Couture (2g, 3a) all recorded five points on the day, while Walsh finished with four goals. Speidel notched three points (1g, 2a), while Lukens and Soumekh each logged two helpers. Defender Spencer Riehl and Campbell each scooped up six groundballs, while Riehl also forced three turnovers.
DU outshot the Generals 36-33 and was 4-for-6 in extra-man opportunities. Denison also successfully converted all 13 of their clearing attempts. Big Red goalie Nick Petracca improves to 2-0 on the year after making nine saves in 57 minutes, while Jennings suffered the loss for Washington & Lee.
Denison returns to action on Friday (Mar. 2) when Albion rolls into Granville for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
