No. 9 Stevens Manhandles Merchant Marine

HOBOKEN, N.J. – In the 2012 home season opener for the nationally ranked No. 9 Stevens Institute of Technology men's lacrosse team, the Ducks dominated their opposition from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, 21-4, at the DeBaun Athletic Complex on Wednesday night, February 22. Stevens never trailed in the contest.
From the opening face-off of the game, to the final horn in the fourth quarter, Stevens controlled every aspect of the contest. The Ducks outshot, USMMA, 58-21, they scooped up more groundballs, 44-22, and they won more face-off, 16 to 11. Stevens was also 21-for-25 in clear attempts.
Thirteen different Ducks scored in the game, while six others picked up assists. Leading the way offensively for Stevens was freshman attack Andrew Scrutchfield (Lewes, Del.) who tallied three goals and an assist for four points. The three goals in the hat trick were the first scores of Scrutchfield's young collegiate career, and he also led the squad with six shots on goal.
Also recording a hat trick was junior midfielder Nicolas Philippi (Mullica Hill, N.J.) on four shots on goal. A trio of Ducks recorded two goals in the victory as well. Senior attack Kevin Rose (Garden City, N.Y.), senior attack Alex Hofrichter (Terrance Park, Ohio), senior midfielder Taylor Brown (Cortland, N.Y.) and junior midfielder Harry Dorne (Morristown, N.J.) all scored twice, while Brown assisted on another goal. Dorne put four shots on goal, and Rose picked up five groundballs.
Seven other Stevens student-athletes chipped in with a tally in the contest. Finding the back of the net once tonight were senior defender Matt Marks (Cortland, N.Y.), freshman midfielder Michael Maroon (Virginia Beach, Va.), sophomore midfielder Eric Proos (Northborough, Mass.), junior midfielder Brian Seldeen (Wayne, N.J.), freshman midfielder James Rudolph-Shabinsky (Nyack, N.Y.), freshman attack Nick Harris (Grass Valley, Calif.) and sophomore midfielder Sean Scrudato (Westfield, N.J.). Maroon and Seldeen both assisted on scores as well.
Closing out the scoring barrage on the night with assists were sophomore attack Charlie Cronin (Northampton, Mass.) and sophomore long stick midfielder Tim Culloty (Mahwah, N.J.).
At the face-off 'X', senior midfielder Michael Steinhauser (Boonton Twp., N.J.) won 10 of 14 face-offs and picked up a game-high 11 groundballs. Junior midfielder Mark Malecki (Hillsborough, N.J.) took five face-offs and won four while also picking up two groundballs.
Three goalkeepers split time in the cage for Stevens tonight, with senior Eric Yando (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) picking up the win. Yando played the first 30 minutes of action and stopped two shots and allowed one goal. Junior Ben Shaffer (Armonk, N.Y.) and freshman Matthew Deiner (Millstone Twp., N.J.) split each quarter in the second half. Shaffer allowed three goals and made four saves, while Deiner turned away four shots in his 15 minutes of play.
Stevens will be back in action on February 29, when the Ducks play host to Eastern Connecticut State University at 4 p.m. for a non-conference showdown at DeBaun.
