Cornell Defense Puts Bears in Hibernation

CORTLAND, N.Y. – The nationally
fifth-ranked Cortland men's lacrosse team scored the first 10 goals
of the game and went on to defeat Potsdam, 14-2, in SUNYAC action
Saturday afternoon at the SUNY Cortland Stadium Complex. The Red
Dragons improved to 11-2 overall and 4-0 in the conference, while
the Bears fell to 6-8 and 3-2.
Freshman Joe Slavik (Binghamton/Seton Catholic) led Cortland with three goals and one assist. Junior Greg Wright (Irondequoit/West Irondequoit) scored a game-high five points on two man-up goals and three assists, senior Chris DeLuca (Sayville) recorded two goals and an assist, senior Eric Martin (Fairport) and junior Eric Richards (Skaneateles) each scored two goals and junior Mike Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) had one goal and one assist.
Senior midfielder Justin Battino (Plainview) earned the start in goal on Senior Day for Cortland and did not make a save in one minute, 28 seconds of action. Freshman Scott Tota (Webster/Webster Schroeder) took over and stopped four shots in 48:12 before giving way to sophomore Mike Kaminski (Sayville), who turned aside four shots and did not allow a goal in 10:20. Senior Justin Schneidman (Katonah/John Jay-Cross River) recorded a game-high five caused turnovers.
Sophomore Robbie Ashlaw (North Syracuse/Cicero-North Syracuse) paced Potsdam with a goal and an assist. Sophomore Kyle Nicholas (Syracuse/Westhill) scored a goal and junior Peter Pike (Watertown/General Brown) chipped in with an assist. Senior Pat Corbine (Canton/Hugh C. Williams) started in goal and registered six saves in 39:49. Sophomore Stefan Sloma (Niskayuna) made two saves in 13:43, and sophomore Paul Gordon (Maine/Maine-Endwell) did not stop a shot in the final 6:28.
Richards and Slavik gave Cortland a 2-0 lead after the first quarter with goals at 9:07 and 7:58, respectively. The Red Dragons pushed the lead to 6-0 at the half as Slavik and Richards each scored his second of the game and DeLuca closed the quarter with back-to-back goals.
The lead grew to 10-0 before the midway point of the third quarter. Slavik netted his third at 13:41, followed by Martin at 10:20. Wright then tallied two man-up goals at 10:00 and 8:23. Ashlaw finally put the Bears on the scoreboard at 4:49 of the third quarter, and Nicholas closed the stanza with a man-up goal at 3:53. The Red Dragons finished the game with the only four goals of the fourth quarter as senior Jay DiStefano (Huntington/Harborfields), Tota, Martin and senior Brandon Phelps (Raleigh, NC/Wakefield) each found the back of the net for the 14-2 final. Phelps' score was his first of the season.
