No. 2 Gulls Beat Frostburg, First Meeting for Programs Since '78

FROSTBURG, Md.
– The second-ranked Salisbury University men's lacrosse team notched a 13-6 Capital Athletic Conference victory over host Frostburg State University on Saturday.

This marked just the third overall meeting between the two programs, and the first since the 1978 season.

The Sea Gulls (13-0, 6-0 CAC) tallied the game's first goal at the 11:28 mark, as sophomore midfielder Ryan Clarke scored off an assist from junior attackman Matt Cannone. Senior midfielder Spencer Smith added a goal a minute later, and then Cannone fired home a goal off an assist from Clarke for the 3-0 lead just 36 seconds later. Salisbury senior midfielder Shawn Zordani closed out the quarter with an unassisted goal with four seconds remaining.

The Bobcats (4-10, 0-6 CAC) recorded their first goal of the contest nearly halfway through the second quarter, as Dan Dowd scored off an assist from Ryan Serio. FSU cut the lead to 4-2 following an unassisted goal by Lucas Flaig. Zordani added his second goal of the day with 5:17 remaining, extending Salisbury's lead to 5-2, a lead that the team would take into halftime.

The third quarter featured six goals in the frame, with each team finding the back of the net three times. For Salisbury, senior midfielder Perry Craz and junior attackmen Erik Krum and Tony Mendes all tallied goals.

Salisbury's offense came alive in the fourth quarter, as the Sea Gulls outscored the Bobcats 5-1. Cannone spearheaded the offense in the quarter with three goals.

Cannone (four goals, one assist) and Zordani (three goals, two assists) led the way with a game-high five points apiece. Clarke, Craz, Krum and Mendes each finished with one goal and one assist.

SU senior goalkeeper Johnny Rodriguez finished with six saves to earn his 13th victory of the season.

Dowd (two goals, one assist) and Serio (one goal, two assists) each recorded a team-high three points for the Bobcats. Goalkeeper Tyler Haines recorded 19 saves in the contest for Frostburg.

The Sea Gulls are set to return to Sea Gull Stadium this Tuesday, for a CAC contest with Marymount (Va.) University. The game is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
