Davis, Rusell Lead No. 4 RIT Over Ithaca

ROCHESTER, N.Y.
- Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy) and Tyler Russell (Livonia, NY/Livonia) each scored three goals to lead the fourth ranked RIT men's lacrosse team past Ithaca College 11-9 in Empire 8 action on Saturday. The win keeps RIT perfect on the season at 9-0 including 3-0 in the Empire 8. Ithaca falls to 5-4 on the season, and 1-1 in the conference.

Ithaca jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first quarter on goals from Andrew Bruce and Tom Mongelli.

Russell scored the first of his three goals on the afrernoon with 1:03 remaining in the quarter to cut the Bombers lead to 2-1.

Mongelli made it 3-1 Bombers with his second goal of the half just :49 seconds in the quarter.

RIT's offense caught fire, scoring three straight goals in a :24 second span to take a 4-3 lead. Davis, Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) and Russell each scored in that stretch to give the Tigers their lead of the game.

Davis added another with 7:49 remaining in the half to extend the RIT lead to 5-3, the Tigers largest of the game.

Jake Long cut the lead back to 5-4, tallying his first goal of the game with 7:10 remaining in the half.

MacIntosh won the opening face-off of the third quarter, scooped up the ground ball, drove to the net and scored just :10 seconds into the quarter to extend the Tigers lead back to two goals at 6-4.

After a Devin Weinshank goal made it 6-5, Chris Cherami (Olwick, NJ/Seton Hall Prep) scored on an assist from A.J. Tingle (Cary, NC/Green Hope) to make it 7-5 Tigers.

Tom Mongelli scored two straight man-up goals for the Bombers in the latter stages of the quarter to tie the score at 7-7.

Tingle and Jordan-Collins Hartwig answered back for the Tigers with goals that increased the lead out to two goals at 9-7.

Long closed out the scoring in the third quarter, scoring with :26 remaining to make it a 9-8 game heading into the fourth qurter.

Tingle found Davis with 12:02 remaining in the game to increase the Tigers lead to 10-8.

Russell scored off an assist from MacIntosh with 8:35 remaining to give the Tigers a 11-8 lead, their largest of the day.

Mongelli scored his fifth of the game with 4:32 to cut the lead down to two at 11-9.

Long had a shot with 1:36 remaining that would've pulled the Bombers to within a goal, but Bob Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) saw the shot and made the big save.

The Tigers ran out the clock to pick up the win.

RIT outshot the Bombers 40-36 and won the ground ball battle 33-29. The Bombers won 14-of-23 face-offs and were 3-for-6 with extra man.

RIT was 24-of-26 on clearing attempts, while Ithaca ws 17-of-24. Tonnessen picked up his ninth win of the season for RIT, making nine saves. David Gal took the loss for the Bombers, despite making 17 saves.

Mongelli led Ithaca with five goals and an assist. Jake Long added a pair of tallies, and Andrew Bruce and Devin Weinshank each scored a goal.

Davis and Russell led the Tigers with three goals. MacIntosh scored two goals and dished out three assists. A.J. Tingle had a goal and three assists for the Tigers.

Senior MJ Kiekebelt (Caledon, Ontario/St. Andrews College/Aurora) had five ground balls and caused five turnovers. Eric Horeth (Webster/Webster Schroeder) caused four turnovers, while Avery Hallett (Syracuse, NY/Bishop Ludden) scooped up four ground balls.
