Amherst's Acton Earns NESCAC POW Honor
from press release
AMHERST, Mass. – Amherst College first-year Devin Acton (Sudbury, MA) has been named NESCAC Men's Lacrosse Co-Player of the Week for helping Amherst (5-1) bump its win streak to five games, recording five points during a 12-7 win over Eastern Connecticut State and six points in a 13-10 victory at Bowdoin.
Amherst out-scored ECSU by a 4-3 margin in the second quarter, with Acton having a hand in each of those four goals to help the Jeffs carry a 7-3 lead into halftime. He then opened the scoring in the fourth quarter to stop a two-goal ECSU spurt.
Acton netted only one goal in the first half at Bowdoin, but he scored three times in the third quarter to help the Jeffs pull ahead for a 9-5 advantage. He then opened the scoring in the fourth period and added an assist.
This marks the first time since Apr. 24, 2006 a first-year has earned NESCAC Player of the Week honors. Acton is the first Lord Jeff to be named Player of the Week since Cushing Donelan '05 received the award on Apr. 5, 2004.
Acton's six assists and team-leading 18 goals rank him third in the NESCAC in goals per game (3.00) and tied for fourth in points per game (4.00). After scoring twice in each of his first three outings, Acton had three goals against Connecticut College, four against ECSU and five against Bowdoin.
Amherst is ranked 14th in the latest USILA Division III Coaches Poll, marking the highest the Jeffs have been ranked since 2006. Tied with Middlebury and Wesleyan for third place in the conference standings (2-1), the Jeffs will return to action Tuesday, Mar. 29, when they head to Wheaton College for a non-conference game at 4:30 p.m.
