No. 8 RIT Rallies to Beat Clarkson

POTSDAM, N.Y. - The No. 8 RIT (4-0) men's lacrosse team rallied to beat Clarkson University (3-2) 12-10 in non-conference action from Potsdam, New York on Saturday. The Tigers trailed 9-6 with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter, but rallied allowing just one goalover the final 22 minutes, to earn their fourth win of the season. Senior Jordan MacIntosh (Oakville, ON/Holy Trinity) led RIT with seven points on five goals and two assists.
Clarkson came out on fire in the first period, taking a 5-1 lead through the first 15 minutes, scoring all five goals in the final eight minutes of the quarter.
RIT returned the favor in the second quarter outscoring the Knights 5-1. Junior Jordan Collins-Hartwig (Buffalo, NY/Clarence) scored two of the Tigers five goals, while MacIntosh, Tyler Russell (Livonia, NY/Livonia) and Kelso Davis (Freeport, ME/Deerfield Academy) each scored a goal. Collins-Hartwig scored with 19.5 seconds left in the period to tie the game at 6-6.
Clarkson started the second half the way they started the game, with plenty of offense, tallying the first three goals of the quarter. Bryan Huff gave the Knights a 9-6 lead with just under seven minutes remaining in the third quarter.
From that point on RIT's defense would stiffen, holding Clarkson to just a single goal over the final 21:55 of the contest.
RIT pulled back to within one goal, as Russell picked up a groundball, turned and fired with five seconds remaining in the frame. He scored two goals late in the quarter to help the Tigers pull closer.
Russell opened the scoring in the fourth quarter, tying the score at 9-9 on his third goal of the game.
MacIntosh took over from there, scoring the Tigers final three goals of the game, inlcuding the game winner with 4:32 to play. He flicked a shot past Clarkson goalie Ryan Cole after the Tigers had worked the ball around in the zone.
Davis and Collins-Hartwig finished with two goals for the Tigers, while senior Iric Bressler (Stafford, VA/North Stafford) added three assists. Doug Hemmink was 13-of-21 on face offs and grabbed five ground balls.
MJ Kiekebelt (Caledon, Ontario/St. Andrews College/Aurora) had a team-high 12 ground balls and caused two turnovers to help lead a stout RIT defense. Senior Bob Tonnessen (Ridgefield, CT/Ridgefield) picked up his fourth win of the season allowing 10 goals and making 11 saves.
The Tigers return to action on Wednesday, March 23 when they host SUNY Fredonia at 4 pm on RIT's Turf Field.
